91 Suburban V2500 - Tow/Weekend Rig - Build Thread

Is there a chance something is funny with your dual bat setup?

Why do you ask? In terms of me having trouble with ign components?

Don't think anything is funny, other than the 2nd battery connections need to be cleaned/redone.

It runs in dual mode all the time the key is on, and separates when key is off.

Just wondering if its something simple or something that was changed from the stock set up...cause that's usually the case in my experience. Not saying you installed anything incorrectly, just hoping for an easy answer for ya

Thanks man. I've been running this setup for years now, no issues.

I'll check spark when i get home. I also need to hard-wire in a remote starter lead thing, as its too hard to get the leads onto the starter as is, and makes troubleshooting by myself impossible.

Ign coil went bad. Didn't even try testing spark, just swapped coils on a hunch, and was right!

Msd street fire coil, probably 3 yrs old

Have another on order, will be here tmr or Wednesday.

Too bad rock auto shipped me the wrong radiator, or this thing would be ready to dominate again this weekend

Success! Glad it wasn't something mojor

Man you have bad luck with ignition components it seems.

Tell me about it.

Wonder why.

Considering carrying a distributor and timing light as a spare part :dunno:

Definitely carrying a new coil though.

Any real difference between the regular MSD blaster and the Streetfire version?

One shows 44,000v, the other shows 48000.

48 is more than 44?? Lol

I hate to suggest getting a cheap hei setup to keep with you (summit has dist with coil fr $99) because that doesn't help solve your issue, but vs waiting on AAA who won't help you with a boat if your towing, itd almost be a cheap backup

I'm over cheap ign components. I also don't like the idea of hot swapping a distributor when is 200˚+ under the hood, but see your point.

I ordered a new MSD distributor + coil before i even diagnosed it, so they will be here today.

Considering keeping the Dist as a spare, or returning it and getting a cheap summit one as a spare. Needing to get towed with a boat would be a nightmare.....and if i carry it, it'll never go bad, right?:dunno:

Seems to be the way of the cosmos... Just like how any time i am bored at work i can put on my headphones and within a minute or so, someone will come up and want to chat as a good song is coming on...

thats kinda what i was thinking. although it would bring the suck. until you can 100% diagnose the root cause, having a gtfhome setup would never be a bad plan.

I wish there was a route cause, but not sure there is.

The major down time was from a bad quality distributor, the previous from a cheap ign module, and now from an "older" coil.

The coil giving up could have been heat related.

At this point though, ALL ign components will be new MSD with a few months, so should be good to go for a while.....:dunno:

Well, all new cooling system, and it cools just BARELY better. If someone needs a nice brass radiator, the one i pulled out just need to be cleaned out. PM me.

Wish i had stepped up to a bigger radiator, but didn't have the time to deal with it.

Thinking of trying some cooling additives, a different fan/clutch setup, or going to windstars.

There is just too much hogging cooling air flow. Oil/Trans coolers, then evap a/c cooler, then radiator. With a stock, wonky 5 blade fan on a stock clutch.

Maybe a pair of windstar fans would help my situation.

It runs at 205-215 all the time, on the freeway, etc. Just wants to heat up towing, or when its hot up going up a grade.

With such a lack of power, this thing needs to be able to pull up a grade, towing, at WOT for 20-40min at a time w/o overheating. That doesn't happen right now. Trans also has been getting hotter than i would like, considering what i can add to that cooler in terms of aux fans w/o swapping to the B&M cooler with integrated fan.

A friend of mine tried the Royal Purple additive and it dropped his temps down 10* or so.

Also, if you want to free up some cooling area up front, you could try one of those trans coolers that fit on the frame rail. Good air flow and it tucks up out of the way.

Yeah. One of the car mags...or maybe 4x4 mags?...recently did an article on cooling. One of their recommendations was a modern, thinner radiator and getting as much crap out from in front of the radiator as possible. Remote mount with fan coolers and such for the peripherals. Also a good running fan.

for right now im just running water and royal purple additive for a rust inhibitor, but once it starts to cool off it will be flushed and antifreeze mix will go in.

Finally swapped my outside passenger side rear view mirror.

For what its worth, the 92-99 style head will swap onto the 90-91 mount, which is a huge relief, as you can't really buy the 91 style easily. Bought some cheap repro from ebay, and was very impressed with the quality. Swapped plugs, and the new head mounted to my old bracket!

Stoked. THe folding part of my old one was all messed up, and didnt' stay in place.

Got the burb out, went up Mt. Reba again in bear valley.

Simple trail that i've run before, but about the only place this thing gets off road.

Did WAY better with the 4.10's and functioning gov lock. Very mild wheeling, but fun to get the beast out in the dirt!
