'96 Vortech swap into a '79...got the donor

well right now im running the swampers that came with it....but i assume u mean the tall skinnys. they are firestones. off of an agway spayers truck.

Vss Solutiuon

Here is the solution to your vss problem. Find a np241c and remove the reluctor ring from it. Then remove the rear out put cover on your np205. Install the reluctor ring onto output shaft as the have the same spline count. next you will need to "machine" a flat spot on the outside of the output housing and drill a hole big enough to place the sensor. Bolt it all back together and presto change-o problem solved.:D

got it

and i picked up the truck....$400 and this is what i got. also talked to jim. ill be eliminating all the emisions, VSs, EGR, A/C, etc and also boosting the power.

Here is another option (in theory) that may be worth a look for anybody who isn't deleting the VSS. In the mid 80's the Camaros (and prolly some other GM cars too) used a mechanical speedo cable up to the dash, and then converted it to electrical in the back of the speedo gage. You could get the back part of one of those gages and stick it up under the dash to convter mech speedo to VSS. I think those setups output something like 2000 pulses per mile. You could wire that into a DRAC with the DIP switch mod and some math to calibrate the signal. Of course ,then you need to run a '90+ or an aftermarket electric speedo. Sounds like way more work than deleting VSS and keeping the mechanical speedo though.

this is a question for anyone who has done a vortec swap.

what kinda mileage are you getting? and what size motor?

mine gets about 15mpg with 35" tires and 4.56 gears and a 5.7 liter vortec. you'd get better mileage the closer your truck is to stock gears and tires.

Depends what the Vortec ECM wants as a signal. It probably processes the raw 40 pulse per revolution signal from the VSS on the output shaft, unlike the earlier DRAC or speedo cable setups that either output the 2000 pulse per mile output the older ECM's were looking for, or converted the 40PPR signal to 2000PPM before it got to the ECM.

If it weren't for the transfercase portion, 40 pulse VSS would be a no-brainer swap.

Yeah, now that I think about it, 40 pulses per rev is more than 20k pulses per mile - I doubt the DRAC is that flexible. You would have to go to a Dakota Digital box or something.

very cool, I used to own a 99' Z56 tahoe 2wd 5.7 vortec police package.. thing was quickk damm did she get up and move...

hey pennsboy...do you still have donor truck...i need that pass side fender..my local yards all put salvaged trucks together and i can't find a genuine gm fender, they want to sale me tiawan crap thats universal for 88-99..i want a stock gm fender and mine is 96 also

what size are they?

are you talking about those spray rigs that look like they're on stilts? what size is rim? how tall is tire?

well guys thought id update the thread. the swap is done i will be adding pics soon. for some starters the swap is really direct bolt in and easy. the computer from jimsperformance is easy as pie and jim is fast. the motor bolts right in no clearence problems. also if you are goin to d othis you have alot of options. for me i used as much factory equipment as possible for clean and cheap.

some areas that people might as.

intake- factory mounted and sucks air from pass fender well.

fuel- autozone E2000 pump mounted under bed to compensate for the inbed tank. works well just make sure you plum it in the right direction. this will provide enough pressure. aslo on a fuel note i found that the stock throttle cable and pedal only gave me 1/3 throttle at the floor. so tweaked old pedal to match donor trucks and used donor cable.

Cooling- old thermostat does not fit new motor. you need a pipe adapter to make it work or get new sender. also used the donor radiator. its thinner, aluminum and huge. the truck cools w/o fans at all. i also used fans out of a caravan. with swithed hi.lo fans.

anything else ask
