97 King Cab DS-Ton build - Rock Jock 60 and shaved 14

I got a little time in the garage tonight. I wanted to get things mocked up to make sure I had all the parts I needed prior to the holiday weekend. I got the servo mocked in place:

I also got the rest of the tires/wheels mounted and the beadlock rings swapped out. I need to swing by the Parker Store for some hose parts and brake lines tomorrow and SDHQ for a different adapter for my steering box. I'm hoping that's the last shopping trip for a bit.

IT'S ALIVE (again)!

I had a busy 3 day weekend and got it back on the road. Unfortunately I didn't have time to get it offroad :(.

Here are the progress pictures, starting with my custom pitman arm, looks like crap, but it's strong:

Here's the axle at full stuff, it actually worked out perfectly with the crossmember and frame. Everything lined up so I could stuff the 60, just as far as I could stuff the 44 (with the pitman arm mods):

With full stuff figured out, I fabbed up the shock mounts and pulled the axle to finish welding and paint:

Here's the first shot of it supporting it's own weight:

The steering all plumbed up:

We put a few miles on it. Everything works great, but I think I have some drag on the steering column where it goes through the firewall. It's causing enough drag that it won't self center, which makes it a little weird to drive. I think I should be able to either clearance the firewall a bit to allow better movement of the steering shaft, or add another u-joint to the column, however that option would require a support bearing since there would be 3 U-joints on an unsupported section.

Not returning to center is very annoying.

It seems like the system is breaking in. I drove it to work today and it wasn't too bad. It drives like a big truck now instead of a car like it used to. I think I need to tweak the alignment a bit and try to figure out if I'm getting any binding in the column. On the bright side, the brakes work great, better than the 1/2 ton stuff.

Yeah, I get a kick out of the guys "upgrading" their Dana 60's to 3/4 ton brakes......

Martin
Yea, I wasn't sure how the 1 ton stuff was going to work with my master cylinder. The pedal is soft, but I can lock all 4 tires up on asphalt once I go the prop valve adjusted.

Looks so good.

Do you have any cage in the cab?
Not yet, but the roll bar in the bed is 2" DOM and tied into the frame. Between that and the engine cage I think I'd survive a rollover, but I'll definitely be adding a cage before I get too crazy.

Lookin' good!

Thanks Chris!

I bumped the toe in up to 1/4" and it seems to track better. I'm going to get it offroad (and in 4wd) this afternoon, so I'll get some flex shots. I'm not sure how much I'm going to have to trim, but I'm pretty sure the bumper is going to be in the way...

I took it offroad last night, everything worked great! I need to trim the fenders a bit for the bigger tires, but it handled great offroad. I'm going to have to figure out some way to fix the slop issue in the steering box though, it's pretty annoying to drive at highway speeds.

Wow this thing is bad dude, your pretty close to us, you going to KOH this year?

If everything works out, I'll be co-driving the 4891 car at KOH. I've done a Dirt Riot race with him and we went to Glen Helen, but he blew the engine during practice and didn't actually get to race.
