97 sas'sy Sierra/ 80 Cheep 10: tales of a phat block

Yeah my hoist is a couple hours away, the tractor would have been a pain to try and use the bucket. So my old man said lets use a tee pee to get er done. Worked slick.

Nice! So what all did you end up doing to it? This was a different running bottom end? Is that right?

Yeah was a rebuilt motor, can see honing marks in the cylinders. Gasket matched 305 heads/my old intake. Put that cam in as well. Also found a like new double roller timing chain when I pulled it apart.

Also put new rad hoses on, it was a hassle because it has a 4 core diesel rad with the bigger in/outlets.

Went for a good test bag tonight, needs some tuning as it seems to run out if fuel on a long pull/the odd carb backfire. Might need some more timing, set it a lil low while I broke the cam in. Than my timing tape half ripped off. Have to check it in the morning more.

Sweet! I think I'm going to construct my own teepee and do me an engine swap now. You should put some tarps or something on yours now and paint it up with buffalos and stuff to commerate your success. :thumb:

Put some new timing tape on, bumped the timing up a few degrees. I set it at 30-31 total when I broke the cam in, bumped it up to 36 total. Can't get it to backfire through the carb anymore. Seems to be more responsive as well.

Got motivated and tossed the kingpin bushings/springs I got from ORD as well. The old stuff was sacked out and well worn. Kingpins have a bit of pitting but I'm not overly worried about em.

Noticed the short tie rod is shot as well, guess that's the next thing on the list :popcorn:

I had good luck with 64cc chamber TBI heads to get a little more compression on a stockish smog 350. Seemed better with those than the worn out 624's.

They're dirt cheap too

can you still use a regular/non vortec style manifold with these heads?

OP, now that you have the timing dialed in, interested to see how you like the cam/ torque...:thumb:

The center two bolts on each side are angled different, but in the same location.

Still needs some more tuning, but aside from that it seems pretty decent. Has lots of torque in the 3-4k range. Seems to be generally more snappy Than my old worn out motor. Not sure if I gained anything from gasket matching the heads and intake, but if the heads are apart, stupid not to do it. For a budget build I'm happy with the results.

Just have to ream the center 4 bolt holes out for em
To fit.

I had a pro products intake that came with adapters to be used with either tbi heads or the old style ones. Just an FYI

picked up a decent front tie rod off a buddy who went to highsteer, while under there checkin stuff, noticed the pitman arm had backed off a bit. Way better meow, death wobble is controllable big time and very slight compared to before.

went for a good trail ride, did a lil fishing. pics:

Last pics are in a forest fire burn from ten years back, and the hill I climbed was where the fire tower used to be. Said it didnt turn out, but it is way steeper than the picture shows.

On another note, tweaked the carb some more. Got that dialed in I figure now. Still need to mess with the timing though.

That is all.

Yeah guess sometimes a person takes stuff like that for granted. All them pics are minutes from where I grew up.

Might send a couple pics in for the calendar

Yes. The center two bolts on each side of the intake are drilled at a different angle however. I used longer bolts with old rocker pivot balls as washers to make it work, but there's probably a less hack way to accomplish that. My intake was also one of the generic ones with those holes drilled larger to use some supplied adapters for both intake styles. I lost those somehow.
