97 sas'sy Sierra/ 80 Cheep 10: tales of a phat block

Yeah something to the tune of that. Really not that bad for a $50 motor, although I guess I did fix up the top end. I remember the cam bearings looked less than stellar, cylinders had some rust pitting. Heck I even reused the oil pan gasket it had, pan was half full of sludge as well. Prob explains the litre of oil it would use every 700 miles :pimp:

Haha! I never said that engine was one of my favourites!

You did a great job cleaning it up... I’m impressed you put that many miles on it. :waytogo:

My dads been gone over 16 years. Still sucks... gone way before his time just like your dad Jesse. Sorry!
What can a guy do? You never know. Have fun when you can. Never worry about crap that doesn’t matter to you.

Well if you went for a spin in it now, it ain’t the same mill. I’d have to say it’s not bad for what it is, one of the best 305s I’ve had for sure. I’d never expected it to last that long, but hell its got great oil pressure and seems to run not bad. I’ve been all over hells half acre with it and it’s never let me down. So if say it’s done well.

Yeah your exactly right, do what you can when you can. Just seems tough some days.

I put led replacement bulbs in my stock housings, I prefer the factory look over any of the aftermarket lenses.

I got a pair of chromed ones from buddy for cheap 10 years ago, back when they had a good warranty. One of the lights started acting up, so I exchanged em for a set of brand new smoked ones. So I figured I did pretty well there for only spending a hundred bucks for some 500$ lights :haha:

I’ve still got the Smoked 3rd brake light on it, might leave it. The LED cab light is kinda handy.

Put a rock auto order last week for some intimidator ss parts, figured Midas well tag on 4 sets of delco plugs.

Pulled some ngk fine tips out of the 97 that had about 70 miles on them, wasn’t much left of all 8.

Picked up that 454 last night. It’s a 3999289 block, supposedly it is a higher nickel and thicker casting block from what I have read? @79rustyk10

Sounded healthy when we had it running in the c30 on Friday. The guy had it pulled for me yesterday.

Bought the rad as well, figured than I don’t have to mess around trying to mount my 81 up 4 core. This one isn’t very old and is still copper.

Also it came with a new starter, alt and fuel pump.

As I was looking at it, noticed he dented the one valve cover with a chain. :doah:

Dropped the 350 off at my friends place Friday as well. Glad it’s out of my way.

Put some new treads on the 97 tonight, 315/75/16 firestone destination mt2’s.

Drives like a new truck compared to the old worn out fierce I had on it. Didn’t balance them, just flipped em on at a friends place. Seem to be quite quiet on the highway for what they are.

I switched tire companies for work and now we do all Bridgestone/Firestone. I have been happy with them and the killer deals they give us I will be running that exact tire when I get new shoes for my blazer. I really like the look of them.

I seen them on buddy’s dads truck and thought they looked pretty good, he said they were quiet and dug like a buggar.

For the price of them I couldn’t go wrong either. Paid $290/tire over the counter at a big box store, another big name tire shop we have here had them for 350$. Figured that was a good enough deal to me.

Speaking fat blocks, hung it on the hoist in the back alley the other day while I degreased it. Got some strange looks while doing so :haha:

Had to put a kick stand on my engine stand, wheeled the motor into the corner of the garage. There it’ll sit till I get the other phat block truck tuned up.

I finally had to just pony up for a better engine stand when I did the 454 swap.

Didn’t help that my stand was bent, straightened out the best I could. When I moved I had the 350 on it unsupported in the cargo trailer for 20k, that is not helping the cause much.
