97 sas'sy Sierra/ 80 Cheep 10: tales of a phat block

Said screw it, ordered up some bearings off rock auto. Only bearing I’m not able to find easily for a good price is the closed needle bearing on the backside of the front output. Mine seemed to fit nice still. So I’ll leave it I guess.

Got the idler shaft in, front output and shift rail slid in. Started on the rear output, 1 of the thrust washers was pretty worn.

Took the front shaft in today, had it straightened and balanced. Seems to have tuned that up with it running on the stands.

Picked up some exhaust valve rotator eliminators and valve seals as well. Wish I’d have not been lazy when the motor was on the stand :doah:

A lot of fiddle flock chopping around tonight.

Spent more time trying to rig up a coupler to air up the cylinders than making a spring compressor. Did cylinder number 1, go figure about the valve seal eh. Intake side was good yet. But figured Midas well do it while I’m there.

Going to have to angle the handle back to clear the Mc/Pb. No big deal I guess.

Well what started out as a simple task, turned into a **** when it came to do the pass side of the motor. Dropped a nut down a hole into the lifter valley. Went to get it with a magnet, into the pan that went. So off came the pan, prob not the end of the world. Cleaned it out, fired that back in.

After finishing all the valves on that side. Noticed #2 exhaust rocker was quite worn, and was not pumping hardly any oil up top. Not sure if it was the lifter got plugged or what at some point. By chance I was able to fish that lifter out through a hole in the center it the casting. Took the lifter apart and everything looked okay? When I was picking up a flexible magnet at a big box store this morning they had a few lifters in stock. That was more shocking than getting the lifter out at that point.

So I greased it up, and by chance fished it back into place. Replaced the rocker arm with one I got from a buddy. It started pumping oil up, so on went the tins. Ran it for a solid 15 minute breakin tonight.

If I had to guess there prob was nothing wrong with that tappet other than it may have had some crud in it. It was pumped right up when I took it apart on the bench yet. The tip of the rocker was worn in quite a bit, to the point it wouldn’t allow oil to pass through the hole in the rocker.

Not sure if it’s dumb luck I caught that, or that I was able to take of it fairly easily? It didn’t just happen, I’d guess it was like that for quite some time.

I guess time will tell, gonna hopefully get some miles on it this week if the weather stays nice.

How did the push rod look?

Wrapped up a few loose ends tonight. Went for a spin, motor runs nice and quiet now. No random clacking like before eh.

Put a softer spring in the vacc secondary’s. Seems to have gotten rid of the bog in up top when the 4 barrels open.
