98 k2500. SAS'd and bobbed.

Super productive day today. Spent 8 hours in the garage so far. I managed to roll the truck out, it fits under the door so that’s awesome. I swapped the 98 backing plates onto the rear axle in the truck so I can use the stock e brake cable setup. Pulled the bed off and rolled it back into the garage.

The gas tank is mounted now. The round tube supports the top of the tank and is going to be the upper shock mounts. I also drilled and tapped the axle to put the vent in the tube rather than the hosing. Hopefully that will keep it from puking out the vent on long drives.

The vent should be on highest possible position, I wouldn't lower it that much.

Man you are killing it!
Thanks man

It already was. The axle puked after long drives and it wasn’t oil or temp related. I can only assume it was the diff slinging oil up the vent tube. There is less oil in the axle tubes and on the axle shafts so hopefully it doesn’t pump oil out anymore. Plus almost all of my Dana rear axles have had the vents in the tubes

Didn’t get to work on it this weekend. I spent it out camping. Got to see the upper calf creek falls, peekaboo, and spooky canyon. I think I’ve wheeled the girlfriend’s little rav4 more than anything else this year. It held it’s own on some ledges and three wheel action. I still would have rather had the truck. Aired down 37s” would have been way nicer on the washboard roads.

But don’t think I didn’t get anything done. I scored this overhead console with homelink on eBay. Thankfully it was a new enough model to support rolling code garage doors so it works with my door opener. I’m going to make a switch panel to go in the place of the old rear HVAC switches in it.

Nice work. I added the same overhead console to mine too. Mine is just going to have diesel gauges in it instead.

The rear end is painted and fully assembled. That marked a few things off of the to do list. My goal is to be on the road or ready for paint by next weekend. I have next week off so it shouldn’t be too hard barring any surprises. Exhaust work is my least favorite so I’m sure that is going to take me a bit

I also got my speedo housing back from ORD for the VSS mod. Now I can pull the t case out and swap the front drive stuff over from my other case and toss on the vss.

I’m debating if I should toss a cat in the exhaust system. I could use one of the two that came off the truck. I don’t need it for emissions testing but it’s the right thing to do. On the other hand I love the raw exhaust smell. Or I could just save one on the shelf in case I need it some day.

Yeah you should put it back on. I cut mine out and man it is strong in comparison.
I guess them fruit loops in California aren't all that wrong about that.

I’m passing emissions without a cat due to tester laziness. However, the wife complains about the smell when sitting in parking lots with the windows down. I vote for adding one and will be doing the same at some point.

I don't run them unless I have to, and I don't have to.

but if I did, it would be a larger magnaflow high flow cat.

I don't qualify for any state inspections. The truck will be registered in Texas when this years Utah reg is up. I don't ever plan on going to Texas so it would never get a safety inspection. plus being a c6p here in utah it gets a sniffer and no obdii. the tune will pass a sniffer. I don't care about the smell. All of my vehicles for the last few years haven't had them from the factory. This is the first one that had them. The way my exhaust is built it wouldn't be hard to drop a section and weld in an aftermarket one down the road.

I guess I will wait to install one if I need it. I may use one to quiet the exhaust down but ill see how much having the exhaust run all the way to the back of the truck helps with noise compared to the side dump on the other truck.

I don't have any cats on my '00 5.3, and the fumes are definitely noticeable when parked. But other than that I very rarely have any issues.

My diesel on the other hand, I can smell that thing inside my house while it's not even running lol.

Well it took me all day but the exhaust is done. I learned a bit from the last truck and made the changes here. It now goes all the way out the back. And it also exits on the passenger side so when I’m in the express lane on the freeway the sound doesn’t bounce off the concrete wall and back into my ear. I dont care for exhaust work, I tend to re do things until they are perfect so it takes me forever. There is always a 1/2" more room to be gained here and there or whatever. This one I wouldn't let myself do that and just got it done. I'm already regretting not using the Tig on it.

I had to re make the right header to y section since the 4500 is deeper than the sm465 and the frame is just a little bit narrower at the header collector. I decided to just go in front of the oil pan like I wanted to in the first place. The extra lift on this truck makes me more comfortable with it. I reused the section from the y to the muffler. Then just made from the muffler back.

I also ran the fuel lines from tank to engine. All the stuff from the other truck fit perfect in this one since things are pretty much in the same place.

Transfer case day. I swapped the front outputs between cases since my round pattern was synchronized. I also installed my VSS modded rear output and cut the shift shaft for sweet twin stick action. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get the spare case back together fully. I managed to misplace one of the shift fork roll pins. It’s probably inside my good case rattling around.

Ever wonder the difference in synchronized and unsynchronized 205s. Look at those front outputs. I noticed the gear also mesh slightly different. The regular front output rides farther forward in the case for some reason.

Oh and if your messing with uncaged roller bearings and you don’t have this stuff, you should rethink your lifestyle
