A friend got a new truck.

Well, we just got back from pick n pull, found an 02 chevy van, paid the Mexicans to pull the 4.3 out of it, and tomorrow its going in the white truck.

That sounds like a much better road to go down. You friend should have a halfway decent truck when you're done.

Well we finally got the old 4.3 out, I have never seen an engine put up so much of a fight coming out. All we had left to do was undo the shift linkage, exhaust, and motor mounts, and just pull it out, well that took 6 people, two engine hoists and an 86 C20 from 11:00 to 5:30 to get out.

I'm thinking you guys may have had a few too many beers during this removal. :D

Hell, he only paid $600 for the truck in the first place.

One of the guys helping us with this swap wants to trade a truck with me, my 94 F250 for his 77 K20

My Ford is 4wd and has a 7.3 IDI and an automatic.
His Chevy has a hot 283 from a 66 nova bored .125 over, a 750 holley, headers, a 4 spd, and a part time kit.

What do we think?

A 1977 K20 with a 4 speed (SM465) should have an NP205 behind it, which is a part time case. If it had a transfer case with a "part time kit" it would be an NP203, which is only behind an SM465 in 1974 and '75.

Well he told me that is you could shift from 2wd to 4wd, I made the assumption that it was part time conversion.

Also the body is in pretty good shape, I would guess 90% rust free, some dents, and it needs a rear bumper.

What's your ford like condition wise? There's a reason he wants to trade, you have a far better vehicle in every aspect except styling. Even there it's tied.

The 283, even bored way out would be a huge issue for me, almost to the point of considering it like buying a truck without an engine, or one with a near dead engine.

I would say the Ford's rust condition is a 7 out of 10, 10 being perfect.
Needs rear wheel wells, and front fender are a bit crunchy, but cab corners, rockers and floors are perfect.

Its got 210,XXX on it, and it needs a bearing in the steering column, the steering wheel moves about an inch and a half up, down, left, and right.
And a new set of glow plugs wouldn't hurt.

His Chevy needs to be painted, a rear bumper, exhaust, and a rear u-joint.
I drove it yesterday, it drives very, very well, despite the fact that my ears were bleeding by the time we were done.

He Is the guy who bought the 92 from the guy were swapping the 4.3's in.

Not trying to hijack but what would a 73 have behind a SM465? And 76 was the swap to putting the NP205 behind them?

Use to be pretty common from what I am told. Was actually the idea for the 302 in the early Z28's.

I guess I should've worded that differently. In a 3300lb car with a 4 speed, a high revving little screamer like that would be awesome. I'd love to build a 283 or 302 just for fun in something light.

However in a 3/4 ton pickup, it would be one of my last choices for lack of low end torque. The 302 in my ford while it's kinda apples to oranges, has the same four inch bore X three inch stroke like the chevy 302, even in a light 2wd half ton, it was lacking in the low end. The 283 is a 3 7/8" bore with three inch stroke correct? I'm lazy and don't feel like searching.

There is no replacement for displacement.

I agree that a small, old school, v8 would suck in a full size pickup. I couldn't imagine having anything smaller than a 350, which is what my 88 k5 is and is also what my C20 pickup had.

I have gone with more cubes, with the 406 sbc. The other option would be a modern engine which could push more hp and tq out of a computer controlled engine.........like the LS engines.

I have heard small v8's that sounded good, but I doubt the torque compared to a 400+ cu in engine, and small engines generally have to spin fast to make a lot of power. I agree with the above post. Small engine for a small light car, and a big engine for a heavy truck.

Well, back to the 99 with the 4.3, we have a bizarre 65+ degree day today, so were going to try and get the new 4.3 in there.

Also, I'm going to give Austin's K20 a better look.

Well we got nowhere today, nobody showed up.

But I did look at this K20. Turns out its actually a 79.
I talked to the guys dad, and the 283 is actually just .030 over, and has a quadrajet. I did look at it, and took some pictures.

It really is in better shape than it looks, all solid, some dents, but almost no rust, floors are good, and runs and drives very, very good.

He has the mirrors and headlight bezels for it, all it really needs is a seat cover, a bumper, and some tires.

Heres the best picture I have of my Ford right now.

Would it be too much to ask for $700 on top of it?
