Abusfullofnuns Suburban going long in the rear

You don't understand the problem, if you look competent (wearing all that nice, safety gear tends to do that) then people start coming to you with their problems. I know, I wear a tie during the week and people come to me with their problems. When I'm in obscene sweats - they don't come to me with their problems and I get peace to work on my stuff. As a side-benefit, I get to be creative in solving a problem.

I do wear bitch mittens, though, can't have my hands looking like I work or anything...

I charge for my time. Stops the BS

Duct tape works too

Well...while you guys have been posting, I've been busting my arse. Success and failure in spades.

Got all of the old stuff out and got the new mounts and crossmember installed. Unfortunately, i can't get the mounts to line up with the wings of the crossmember. The motor needs to move back 1" to 1 1/2" beyond the slotted adjustment of the mounts. I wrestled with it all afternoon and can't get the drivetrain moved back. (Remember my comment about the gravel pad earlier)

From what I can tell all the crossmember and mount parts are side specific. The only thing that looks like it could go on either side is the part of the mounts that go to the block. @TnA Am I correct that the block side mounts can go to either side? Can you think of anything that I could have done wrong? Not sure which mounts were in the truck previously.

I have room to move everything back if I re-drill the trans x-member. I've taken the driveshaft, all shift linkage, and the exhaust hangers off(damn the welded system). I can't pull the exhaust without cutting. I can't tell what is hanging up, but am about to pull the headers to just to confirm it's not the exhaust holding everything up.

the sum total of my day will be detailed on my build.... you have to drill 4 holes, do you want a boo or a full boo hoo? :)

Haha. It could have been worse for sure. Although, have you ever tried to move a motor/trans/TC on gravel? I'm not sure how I'm going to move it, and kicking myself for not putting down some plywood. The truck was too tall to get a good angle with my hoist, so I have a floor jack under the motor and a trans jack under the transfer case. I had a six foot pipe under the rear bumper, wife pushing, and daughter moving the wheel chock just to try to get the truck to move forward around the drivetrain. The damned thing kept inching forward with the motor and all along with it. At this point, I'm not sure how I'm going to move it back by myself. I'm thinking about reattaching the rear crossmember and letting the motor rest on the mounts in order to get a smooth surface under the jacks.

I use the cross cut method and air hammer as well. Unless its tight then I just torch em off with the plasma.

gravel, dirt, mud, yep... been there. 4x4 through the windows with a come-along, or ratchet straps? use your cherry picker to pick up the back of the motor? the transmission hump is removable. As far as moving cars, I've gotten pretty good at moving them by towing them with a running vehicle.

I feel ya. I remember blowing an engine back in the day and having to transplant something else in while on a gravel driveway and it HAD to be done that day so that I could drive it to work in the morning.

I don't miss it.

Good luck though. :D

uhhh...those cross members come out easier if you cut them in half....

:dunno::dunno: crossmember came out easy enough. Use the grinder to take off the river heads and air hammer to push them out. Crossmember came right out. :dunno::dunno: Torch or plasma could have made it faster. I didn't have ten minutes invested in the crossmember. It was all the bolts for the triangles and mounts that took time.

Rain today, so no progress. I did grab some 3/4 inch plywood to put the jacks on. It won't be long now.

Success.....sort of. I ended up using a come along to move the drivetrain back. Motor mounts and everything lined up nicely. I must have snugged the bolts up too soon because the crossmember holes don't line up. I had to run to work so didn't have time to loosen everything to make sure the crossmember lined up. Hopefully I have some time tonight to button it up. I have another smallish project that I want to knock out too. Details later.

Success....for real this time. Still need to retorque everything to be safe and redrill trans crossmember mount points.

I wasn't anticipating having to get work done to both driveshafts just to put in the crossmember kit from Totally Naked Auto, but that may be the case. The rear still fit, but is probably a tad too long. The front is either fixed or stuck together, but it won't reach. I've never had one that wasn't a slip joint, so I'll play with it some tomorrow.

Since I'm a glutton for punishment, I decided to pull the accessory bracket off the lq4. The alternator mount bolt hole cracked due to the on board air bracket using the same bolt. I had already ordered a replacement but hadn't got to it yet. The onboard air comp had to come off, as well as, the alternator. The ps pump was leaking so I have a replacement on hand. After getting everything out, I think it's the low pressure line clamp leaking. Not sure if I want to put in the cheap aftermarket pump to be safe or if I should stick with the oem one.

I got everything squared away this weekend. Truckaholic was kind enough to help me get the mounts set to where I could use them. Everything bolted up the way it should, but I am not happy with the trans linkage. I'll leave that to be addressed when I make transfer case decisions.

Here's a pic of the block side adapter after it was modified.
