Also, subscribe to Richard Holdener on youtube. Somebody already linked one of his dyno vids here, but that dude has an unbelievable amount of time and experience on the dyno testing just about anything you could ever imagine. At the very least it should help you learn up about engine stuff quite a bit. I also really like "Engine Masters" on the Motor Trend on Demand site. they tend to dive a little deeper into the tech, and the production quality is way better...but it's actually the same dyno and Richard and the MT guys are friends.

I'm a big Holley carb fan, but I do not like the truck avenger, they heavily compromised the fuel curve by eliminating some air bleeds just so it would idle on a hill, not worth it to me. Its rich up top and lean down low and there is no getting round that with no air bleeds. You can fix one, but it will make the other worse.

What's the fix?

I Just meant you can jet it up to its not so lean down low, then it will be even more pig rich up high, or you could jet it down so its not so rich up high, then you'll have a worse off idle stumble down low, and even a 50cc accelerator pump doesn't fix it. They should call those carbs a "rock crawler avenger", that's really what they would be good for, low RPM idling around at steep angles. If you are on normal driving or regular offroading, you'll be better off with a street avenger carb, it will run better pretty much everywhere, it just won't want to idle when you try to tip it over. Some people like the Carter/Edelbrock style carbs for offroad rigs, not myself.

Or go EFI, that's the real fix.

Never had those issues with a Q-jet. I could stand my old K5 on it's nose or tail playing in the mountains and it never stumbled or ran rough.

Still, even as good as the Q-jet was it's still not fuel injection.

At this exact moment I knew I would never wheel carbureted again.
This was a jet stage 2 quadrajet which was almost excellent. Id take it back for this use. Made it all the way up and then done. Note, the legit STANDING on the brakes.
This is also where I was too fat and the trail was too steep for even another one ton blazer to bump me up. Only way out was down. @fourwheelerjeff is that you at the bottom.

We never had any issues with the truck avenger. Always ran super good on my kids 72. :dunno:

Never paid attention to afr. If it starts great, drives great, gets decent mpg, and doesn't over heat, why even check it lol.

I understand. I'm simply saying that it can run good but still be fat or lean.

Was it the 670? The 770 is worse than the smaller one. It had a lean stumble at low RPM and I know Holley carbs very well, I can build one from pieces and tune it well without a problem, I have all sorts of jets, springs, squirters, pump cams, etc (air bleeds aren't applicable here). It did the same thing with two different engines, a 355 SBC and a 489 BBC. Holley said the 350 was too small. So then later when I upgraded to 489 they tried to say the same thing at first, I said, its a ~530 HP 489 BBC, how is that too small for a 770? Then the Holley truck avenger specialist guy basically said he wished they didn't make the 770 because of all the tuning issues.

A 870 street avenger took over and worked much better, got the power up top again and no lean stumble down low, but no double pumper for throttle response. Then I got the EFI, better than either, throttle response and power of a double pumper, better mileage than a vacuum secondary, and it does not care about angles or huge bumps, 50 psi of fuel in a rail is like honey badger, honey badger don't give a sh!t. :pimp:
