Attempting alternator swap ( from 10/12SI to CS130 )

I'm pretty sure my alt has two big blades inthe plug. That one in the MC forum shows the CS connector with four little prongs. So maybe I have the older 10/12 SI alt? I'll pull it apart after work and double check, otherwise I'll have to start looking for adapters (which Summit had some, but I didnt pay attention to the connectors).
 
The CS series all use the 4 prong connector, the outside of the connector resembles a kidney.

If you have a two prong connector you have the older 10/12SI version alternator.
 
Were you saying there were no CS equipped cars/trucks in the local yards?

Really no reason to run the adapter unless you can't get the stock CS plug from the wrecking yard, after the CS you won't ever be going back to a 10/12SI. I suppose there might be a CS pigtail available from the parts stores too.

Edit:To clarify, I'm reiterating that you are best off cutting the SI plug completely off the truck, and soldering in a CS plug w/resistor, assuming your rig needs the resistor. An additional electrical connection, solely for the sake of having another connection, or ease of install, is not a valid reason to run one. I'm all about not cutting "stock" wiring, but the adapter harness is not worth the potential failure it can cause.

I believe most auto parts stores have the female side of the 10/12SI plug, with a pigtail, as well as the CS plug. That doesn't mean they will have a clue what you are talking about when you ask though.:wink1:

I have the gauge on the dash, not just an idiot light, so do I need the resistor? and if I do, which wire does it go on or both? I'm all for rewiring something if I'm getting a better product, I just dont want to screw it up and fry something:eek1:.

Our junkyards are pretty picked over of GM stuff. Alot of car stuff, but hardly any truck stuff and almost impossible for the older trucks. I've got a few sources, and now that I know what I'm looking for, I'll ask around to see what I can scrounge up.
 
You need the resistor. My dad was saying this is so the alternator isn't a drain on the battery when the truck is off. Can't recall I've seen anything saying one way or the other elsewhere. Other articles/posts on this topic say that the alternator light is the resistance, which the later trucks don't have, except maybe the ones with idiot lights.

dbreid's post shows the voltages on his plugs, my CS is exactly the same. Key on, all three wires are "hot". The white wire (with resistor) is the one that is not hot with the key off. That's the brown wire.
 
So...can anyone put this in a nutshell of what parts/wires/resistor is needed for the cs130 and cs144 swap?

I bet that would help alot of people. I know it would for me ;).

BTW..i want to do this mod, but im a little scattred from reading all these posts about it.
 
I can cover most of the electrical stuff, the resistor value I believe is listed. (35 to 350 ohm is mentioned, as is 35-500 ohms) I'm not a pro on electrical theory, I think they are rated by wattage, I see .5 to 5 watt resistor mentioned in the one article. If one of the electrical folks wants to comment, they can. My photo above shows the value I got on my multimeter through the resistor. So that would need clarified. I have a feeling the window is pretty large on what resistor values you can use.

But other than that, for the alternator I listed, all you need is the CS plug with some wires left to solder to and the resistor. Solder the resistor into the wire shown above as brown (terminal "B" on the stock truck alt connector) then solder that to the wire coming from Pin "L" on the CS plug. Wire that leads to pin A on the truck connector is cut and soldered to the wire coming from pin S on the CS plug.

That's pretty much it. Unsure of what the battery lug thread is on the CS alternator, but I used a bolt with a 10MM head, and the stock old alternator connector could be used still.

So pared down...add resistor to the stock truck brown alt wire. Solder the other end of the resistor to pin L on the CS plug. Solder red wire from stock truck alt plug to wire on pin S on CS plug. Very simple as soon as someone can tell us what resistor would be good to use. Radioshack has resistors, and they are likely well under $5/each.

My setup has gauges, so no alt light (requiring resistor) and the pictures shown above/commented on by me are stock on MY truck. Other years may be different.
 
Found that I have the right connector (with the four little prongs) so once I get some money that my wife already have spent, I'll be gettin me new alternator!:D
