Battery charger recommendations

just on a bat aside for the easily bored.....

good bat? sorry, it's heavy.... :haha: more lead folks... :deal: sorry honeycomb stuff is $$$$ hungry bs.. deep cycle all day IMO, or at least dual purpose.. your amp draw is your amp draw.. doesn't matter if you have 750 CCA or 900, if the rig only requires 475 on start up.. I'll take the 400+ hrs of reserve capacity to the 12 of a cranking any day.. it's just more durable...

while, there are apps that society has gotten away with "cranking" style bats in recent yrs. OB boats being one, and many new small displacement cars... just a real world check, it's all been about saving/making the bat mannys money all along....

friggin truck with junk? i'll take the oleschool stout reserve capacity, thanks.. to be honest.. i'd find deep cycle to be more beneficial in 95% of the builds I see... that discounting hi-po drag racing, etc type stuff...

the other factor being, when you have a "cranking bat" it will often fail, or at least not fair well, when fully discharged... deep cycle lives for that.. #boathousebatFTW

Only 2?
I have heard of exide, Johnson controls,
East penn, deka, gnb, gmb, I know some merged, but hard to track
Johnson Control has the biggest market share, and Exide has most of the rest when it comes to retail aftermarket batteries. Most of the the other companies just do OEM stuff for the manufactures or motor cycle batteries.

When it comes to battery chargers I just went to Harbor Freight, and bought one of their battery chargers. I got PN# 60581. I do not spend a whole lot of time trying to save dead batteries. I got this one for about $35 out the door.

@ryoken, yes sir. My personal battery doctrine. Heaviest, biggest battery that physically fits. I will admit the few used deep cycle that pressed into cranking duty have done very well.

One of the many reasons I am not a fan of side post batteries. Only 2 common choices

so, for awhile, I guess, 20 ish to 12 yrs ago, I was heavily interested/invested/bored with cranking amps on various marine mills.. from 305's to 12 cyl detroits, Mann's, etc.... I would often sneak in amp draw tests while doing other bs maintenance..

as long as the amp draw while cranking doesn't exceed the CCA, you're good IMO.. and subsequent attempts at starting will have better cranking performance with d/c p stouter plates IME.....

Ok, when charging my battery reads 12.6 when the charger is connected and the charger reading "full" or "green".

Let it charge overnight and while connected to charger reads 12.6

When charger is disconnected it reads 12.3 and won't go above 12.3...

I'm thinking this battery is probably done and in need of replacement.

Try the repair setting. It takes a long time but it has saved one of my batteries.

Nvrmind. I think that is only for wet cell not agm.
I have agm...
I m'thinking it's done, sitting in the AZ sun for 2 years may have drained it. It's coming up on 4 years old anyhow. Plus I rarely drive it, which didn't or doesn't help.

Additionally, I don't really want to spend days charging it either. I'd rather just replace it and maintain the new one a bit better.

Another reason I do not like side post is the soft lead that the battery terminal bolt threads into is soft, and strips or cross threads easily. I switch all my GM vehicles to top post terminal.

I just run a stud and a nut. No issues. :dunno:

I run top and side post! All the connections FTW!
I used to run those dual post group 34/78 batteries myself because most of the time they had the highest amperage ratings then other batteries, but the battery industry seems to be going away from manufacturing the dual post battery. Right now I have two group-34 top post batteries with a 985-CA rating and 800-CCA ratings sitting around ready for a dual battery install that I have all the parts for, but because of work I never have the time to get to it.

34 agm Ac Delco's in mine as well. Dual. What are you planning on using for an isolator?

Side posts are far superior to top post with squeeze clamps.

Everything should switch to top post studs, like semi tractors.

Last I heard they all consolidated into 3 companies.
That was 5 years ago.
Not sure what happened since then
