We will see!!!! I'm assuming it will go "What did you weld it with, one of those stupid wire welders? Them things don't hold shit together, only way to weld is with a stick welder"... Haha, but yeah I know he will like them even if I used the wrong welder lol.

Ive got 13" of overhanging steps for the right hand one, so I may get fancy and make a 12" long 90 degree wrap around thing on that side. Would look really sharp I think.

Probably not worth the trouble, but I saw a stick weld clamp in the multimatic picture. Maybe next time you build him something you should try it, just for him. He might be shocked when you say, yes, it was a stick welder! Put the clamp close to your work so you don't have a foot of stick hanging out to deal with. I've only ever stick welded once, in shop class when I was in 8th grade. ha ha Thats got to be the easiest machine to learn to stick weld with? But have fun chipping off the slag!

Oh yeah, grandpa taught me how to weld with his stick welder laying like 500 beads on his backhoe bucket to add thickness. Literally just sat there and burned and burned for an entire Saturday. That was good stuff.

And yeah I supposed I could do that, but im so swamped right now I gotta speed things up anyplace I can lol.
 
Drove up to grandpas for a test fit before powder coat and actually bolting it to the stairs.

I did find out last night I need to close the open front into a closed loop to meet code. So ill fix that up tonight and send it out to powder tomorrow.

Oh it’s definitly a dumb rule. I know he had mentioned a scroll being added to it on one of the social sites. I never realized that’s what they were for.
 
Colby is the one that mentioned the loop code to me.

I actually only made it that long thinking I was gonna need to add another pole and put it into the concrete. But after just using wood screws for mock up and not even bolts, the thing was ridiculously solid. But I think ill like the look of the loop.

Commercially, that rule is to avoid fire hoses getting hooked. Just like you won't see open end lever handles in commercial settings.

So, not such a dumb rule.
 
After I thought about it its a pretty good move.

Don't want grandpas jacket pocket snagging the end and him tripping over literally the thing I made to help him not hurt himself...

That is the actual reason for the residential code. Or so I was told while building my house.

That’s actually not true.
That is only on california’s Building code.
In California the lever has to return to within 1/2” of the door to prevent a fire hose snag. In IBC it’s not an issue so the rest of the country doesn’t have to. (I think New York May do something similar but not sure never lived there). I only know this because commercial doors is my life. I sold in the bay when I lived there and now I sell in the Midwest.

I actually think it is a good idea and have been waiting for it to trickle down to the rest of the states.
