well I wheeled a turbo 400.. built strong and B&M shiftkit stage II..
tromp the skinny pedal and go.... however I had 33's and 3.73's....

now I got a msc465 and 4.56's and 40"(38.8 true) hawgs.... and yesterday.... few times I had to lay into it... and with the auto you dont really have that suttle slip into gear revved up... unless you call suttle a neutral drop....

I am not bashing either... I will never go back to auto... I was thinking NV4500 or NV5600 for the overdrive as 55mph @ 2250 rpms can suck.. my bud in his Blazer was doing 1700rmps following me... he has a auto w/od.....

I more like the manual for the power control... although with the auto you can punch it and never look at the tach... I was bouncing my tach beyond the stock 5k.... ya just gotta actually drive correctly with a manual vs a auto... :haha:

I could never use an auto, those slush boxes suck donkey dick. Be true to your K5 roots and run the SM465!

I have the SM465 in my truck and it can take whatever you dish out. Also I love roaring past all the little econo boxes on the highway at 3200rpm doing 75mph:D. I scared the crap out of a camry the other day. He nearly swerved off the road.

I'm voting for the THnekid. They are best thing going when you have to let it all hang out.
But whin I aint hanging nekid I will take a 700r4 for all around use any day. Just as strong as a TH 350, lower 1st gear, OD for better gas milage.

I dont know why, you guys even mention that trans at all? The 350????? I mean, can a 350 really hold up? And why even mention that trans, when theres the 400? You can change the gears in THAT to be just as strong as the 350,,, so why not just say 400, and skip the 350 alltogether????:haha: :doah: :haha:

I voted NV4500 cause it has a ubber low 1st plus overdrive. I also THINK that it is as strong as the SM465. No proof just what I think. Plus they use an internal slave cylinder on the newer ones->less stuff haning out to hangup on or break.

Why? Its quite a bit weaker than a 465/NV4500 etc, has less "range" of gears (the difference between the first and last gear is less on the T56 than on a SM465), it was never mounted to a t-case so you would have to use a divorced t-case and you would need stupid low t-case/axle gearing to make that 2.66:1 first gear work.

Its a good trans for a car, but not the right choice for a truck IMO.

It's all about that delicious 50% overdrive in 6th... :wink1:

It tames the 7.56 gears in the Mog404 axles for highway use...and with an available 30-spline output shouldn't be all that hard to mate with an Atlas case. (which has more than enough reduction to make up for the tall 1st gear ratio)

We'll see....

SM465 all the way! I always had issues with my 700, even when it was strickly a DD. I ran my 465/205 half full of water for 6 months. Not intentionally mind you. I did the swap and ran it for a few months and after a cold snap one night it wouldnt shift out of first. Waited for it to thaw and pulled the plug. A little oil and alot of water. Try that with an auto! Hell it even went for a year with a clutch that had sat in the weather for five years. Like someone said before, autos can handle the abuse, but only if you build it up and pamper it like a girl. AUTO"S SUCK!!!!!:cool1:

If you are a long wheelbase auto guy and money is no object, it should be a no brainer - 6L85E!

Gear ratios
First 4.02:1
Second 2.36:1
Third 1.53:1
Fourth 1.15:1
Fifth 0.85:1
Sixth 0.67:1
Reverse 3.06:1

NV4500. I don't have personal experience about wheeling with that or SM465, yet, but I would go manual over slushbox :wink1: I have wheeled both, 350 and 700, but after a little testdrive with manual 'Yota, stick is the way to go

I vote Unimog trans.:D What do those things got, like 10 forward gears and 2 reverse:eek1:

I think the 6L85E has a lower first gear (Allison is something like 3.4?). The Allison does have a slightly higher top gear (0.60?), but the range of gears is better on the 6L85E. Of course, I'm sure the Allison would handle more input torque, but the 6L85E is already used behind the 403HP, 417ftlb L92.

The 'mogs were designed for low speed military applications. Apparently they have problems with the trans overheating and blowing up at speeds over 60. Also, you have to realize that 'mogs don't use a two speed transfer case. The reverse is just a lever you pull to make all of the forward gears run in reverse, but I think it will only allow you to use 1st and 2nd (hence the two reverse gears).

If you really want to compare apples to apples, my truck (with a 4 speed SM465) has 8 forward gears and 2 reverse gears (since I can be in 4 hi or 4 low). 'Mogs have a better crawl ratio than just about anything though.

IMO, the only thing worth a crap on 'mogs is are the axles. They are cool truck though

With my experience if a manual starts to go out, usually you can limp it home.. With an auto ususally you're screwed when it gives out.

can be the case, but i limped 2 autos home this year. one chevy, one honda. both high mileage. one mine, one not.

700r4 is my pick. if i lived closer to good wheeling spots, and didn't have to spend so much time on the highway to get there, a 400 could be good. i'd still miss the 700's low first, though.
