Black Betty - Formerly Blaze the Monster Machine

1984 K5 Project for Dad and kids
The 2 prong flat one is the original 12SI alternator wire, along with the charge wire you mentioned (which is now too small for a newer higher A alternator). You may need to add a resistor if its a CS130 style and you don't have a light bulb indicator.

Ok. So I’ll need to rewire that because the alternator I got from you with the serpentine kit has a different plug and is on the opposite side of the engine.

the tan with white plug, is probably faded pink and is HEI switched power the coil. See if it has 12v with key on. Gauge is to big for oil pressure sender.

The gray plug wire with black trace and Pink ?? looks like ccc carb mc solenoid circuit 39 on diagram you posted. You can eliminate that. What year is this harness ?

Harness is original 85 far as I know.

The gray plug looks tan with black trace but maybe could be pink?

One ought is a little over kill. One thing to watch out is how close the c130 rear batt stud comes to the head valve cover. If I where to do it again I would get a batt stud on side of the rear case to avoid how tight the rear stud is. I am running a 4ga with the original 10ga in parallel.

Funny you mention that but I looked at it yesterday and it’s damn tight. And 1/0 is overkill but it’s cheap and I can upgrade the alternator later and never worry.

Damn I hate wiring. Got the firewall ground attached to the head. Ran a ground from the pulley brackets to the frame using an alternator bolt. Need to find a smaller head bolt for the actual ground on the alternator. Ordered up a bunch of 12/14ga wire to repair the factory harness that’s been damaged. Need to order up so 6ga for the alt to battery. Going to run a cable from body to frame at the rear of the truck. All 0ga. Still need to land a couple of grounds for the wiring harness and a couple of switched 12’s and that will be all done. Like done to where I can turn the key and see it light up and dial in the timing and load the tune done.

Ordered a bunch of little stuff today. New oil dipstick, fuel filler hose, vent hose, PCV and hose, throttle return spring, alternator connector adapter, fuel filler cap, oil filter. So much little crap. Need to order all the fluids, bolts for shocks, bushings for shocks, steering box, extended shock mounts, firewall grommets, air cleaner assembly, stupid crap that adds up.

Anyone around central Texas want to do a wrench fest soon? So much little crap.

Anyone know if the purple wire going to the starter is 14ga or 12ga? Mine is pretty bad with lots of scrapes and the insulation is crumbling so I’m going to replace as much as I can and want to buy the right size. I’ve got a spool of 14ga that looks really close but figured I’d check first.

Why is that wire such a large gauge? Isn't it just a relay trigger?

To clarify, I'm not contradicting @Wes Harden as I can confirm 12ga from the wiring diagrams manual for my 89. I'm asking from a practical stand point.

It was designed to activate the solenoid, which has more windings than a relay to generate a higher pull force. Therefore, more current necessary.
