Black Betty - Formerly Blaze the Monster Machine

1984 K5 Project for Dad and kids
Not much to report thankfully. Just driving it and enjoying it. I do need to tweak the tune. At low throttle, think 5-15%, cruising through neighborhoods or something, AFR’s will lean out to 19-20 and it’ll cough. Touch more throttle and she runs fine but then I’m going to fast.

This thing shifts hard and fast and I love it. On a wot 1-2 shift the front does a big lift. It’s so much fun.

That's good to gear you are enjoying it.

Try holding it where it doesn't like it and see if it get's better on its own or if it needs manual correction.

Not sure how long it needed to self correct. Would have expected it after a minute.

Gotta say, the data log overlay with the Holley is way better than how hpt does their stuff.

Remember if it has any issues anywhere you can shut off self learning off in only that RPM and/or MAP range.

You can also make manual corrections while connected and the results will be immediate.

And I learned that my reverse lights work. Guess when I last checked after fixing some wires, I didn’t have the lever pushed far enough down. So that’s one problem off the list.

Been playing with the tune some and reading up on holley’s forums. Think I figured out why the self learn is only coming on above 2500rpm. Whatever base file it loaded for me it had closed loop not starting until above 2500rpm. Hopefully doing that will help the lean issue at light throttle I’ve been tuning out.

Smoothed the AFR and timing maps out. Dropped the wot shift point from 6000 to 5500. Transferred the learn fuel to base graph. I’ve added about 15% fuel to a few spots on the map to get the afr’s richened up (which is hopefully a moot point now). Tweaked converter lock up and shift points a bit.

Admittedly not much tweaking but still reading and learning. There’s a TON to learn just in the software and how everything relates to itself.

I’ve also got a really annoying rattle//banging in the back of the truck that I can’t find. I emptied everything out and it’s still there. It sounds like metal on metal but not sure.

Have you checked for marks on the exhaust pipes? Or was the rattle there before those got installed?

Glad to see your progress!

There before. It’s very much in the cab. I just finally unloaded the stuff from the back this weekend and first time I’ve driven it since. Maybe I just pull the top off and then I won’t hear it anymore?

I’m leaning that way. I gave it a quick shake and it seemed solid but that doesn’t mean much. I’m about wrapped up on my rzr projects in the shop and the tailgate was next on my list so I’ll pull it and see if that fixes it.

Not looking forward to pulling that heavy SOB.

Wouldn't it make a difference with the tailgate down, then? Easier than pulling it off.

I’d have to get new straps before I could do that as it’s holding on by 4 strands on one strap plus the glass isn’t rolled all the way down and I wouldn’t want to risk shattering it by driving around with it like that.

Found the noise. Rear seat latches. Put some hose over them and problem solved.

Fixed the learn issue to. Drove around for a while in all the spots. Was seeing anywhere from -10 to 25%. Got home and wanted to look at the fuel learn table. Realized then that I guess I needed to run a datalog for it to actually log it. Dumbass.

You can still see the learn table with no data log, it will change and stay that way until you clear it or add it to the base table.

Then either you weren't looking at the live table that's in the ECU or it wasn't run long enough to go into learn mode.

It has to be certain temp and such to enter learn mode.

Or learn mode was turned off by accident.
