Blazer Bash 2023 General Discussion thread **see latest post for updates **Registration closing tonight 9/6/23***

Still working with the county on the approval. The official approval is supposed to happen this month.

Until I see otherwise I’m proceeding as normal.
How’s the battle going?

How’s the battle going?
The struggle is real.

Permit is solid with SITLA, have verbal from BLM waiting on red tape to clear since the application is new. But I’ve been assured we are ok with the BLM due to past experience with the group. The date is booked and paid for with the city for the old city park reserved.

The county is the hold up. What was told to me at the beginning for a timeline was not accurate. Still waiting for an approval from the committee. They have not put it up for discussion. My contact who I had been dealing with from the beginning (who was pro-ohv) was reassigned to a non-special event type gig within the county. Coincidence ? Her replacements has reached out to me in the last couple of days and we had a pretty good discussion. She’s asked for some specific details that aren’t on the main application that’s already done to avoid the back and forth asking for info when the committee kicks the application to specific departments for like search and rescue/ems.

I’ve been strung out over the whole thing with the obvious other stuff going on personally.

Much like last year I’m not sure if they are putting us off to make us go away. My contact at special events doesn’t think that way but it’s not her call. All she can do is make sure all our ducks are lined up to make the process is as smooth as possible.

I’d rather say it’s good to go but until we get the official ok it’s up in the air. If they say no, there is nothing stopping anybody from going and wheeling that weekend except for me. Because all the requirements have been put in by me if I show up and we don’t have an approval in hand and the groups are out, I will be held personally responsible to the tune of 30 days in the county jail and up to a $5000 fine. That’s not a joke or exaggeration, it’s the law there. Wade could have been nailed last year had they not approved us days before the event and he stuck around.

I will have to say away if it comes to that as there is nothing stopping anybody from meeting up on a trail and wheeling. I love you guys but not go to jail type love.

I will continue to plug away at it in the meantime.

If anybody has any questions feel free to ask.

I for one will cancel all my reservations in Moab, if the counsel doesn't approve. Go spend my money somewhere else. Maybe visit longer with my dad in St George, find some trials to do around there. Or Western Colorado any where but Grant County. Think I can even bypass Green River for gas.

Grand county has not approved yet. I’m beyond frustrated. Spoke with my contact three times last week and I’m getting more hurdles to jump.

I’ll be talking with her more next week and report back.

Green River is in Emery County which has been pro-ohv last I checked. There are also a bunch of trails there, but nothing nearly as developed as Moab is. Wife and I go there pretty much every year and have a blast.

Some people need to plan for these trips months, even years in advance, I can’t figure out for the life of me why it takes them so long to approve these things. You have done everything asked of you and they drag their feet until the last possible second. Please know your time and efforts are appreciated by all of us!

That's because they are trying to drive all of these events out of Grand County. The people running the shit show down there pushed tourism for years until it exploded and became insanely busy all the time and now they are trying to get rid what they can. And they are not pro-ohv from what I've heard.

It’s really simple…. They don’t want OHV activities there.

I’m going to be brutally honest here. Had my Dad’s health not gone downhill quick from the beginning of the year to him passing in May, I wouldn’t have been as distracted as far as Blazer bash is concerned and holding the county’s feet to the fire. But they did the exact same thing to Wade last year, not approving until the week of the event.

Hindsight being what it is, I should have just bailed on Moab for this year and got things going in Hurricane or Grand Junction. But I trusted what they said that the process has changed and much like Lucy pulling the football from Charlie Brown as he goes to kick it, here we are again.

I’m not giving up but it is an uphill battle when the powers at be don’t want us there.

I've been communicating with the Special Events Coordinator in Grand county since Monday. Email, text and phone. Dotting i's and crossing t's. She called me this afternoon to go over information and even spent time after 7:00 tonight on her own time to help. Tomorrow she will be sending it out to all the specific county departments to approve each section of the application. She does not believe the application has to go back in front of the county committee, but just the individual departments. She did advise she does not want the application to go to the last minute. If she has a department not responding she will reach out and force the issue, but she does have the power with 5 days before the event to manually override and approve. Again, she does not want the process to go down to the wire.

Part of what I need to make sure the EMS/SAR team gives their blessing is CPR certifications. I have one, I need at least two more. I'll need them ASAP. Email to [email protected].

I need to do a couple of things before opening registration, but I am feeling a little better about where we are at tonight to possibly open registration next week.

That does sound promising.

Besides having a cpr certificate is there anything we can help with? Any and everything I’m sure we’re all willing to help to make this event happen.

On a side note because im hoping for the best.

I appreciate that. I'll need help on site, but dealing with the paperwork is a solo gig. It gets confusing with too many cooks.

I checked on the application online and we have approvals from EMS, SAR, Planning, and the Sheriff's departments. I still need the CPR certs but they have approved the rest for EMS.

I've got the insurance company working on their thing, as it's not live until the event dates, but the county needs to see its done. I had talked to them in May and they said they couldn't get started until closer.

As far as setting up other runs before Blazer Bash, move the discussion outside of the BB threads. Hop over to the Blazin Trails section and start any NON-BB trail gatherings there. It can cause issues with our permits as they are on defined dates, if somebody from any of the permitting agencies were to check in here and see we were planning for trail rides outside of the BB dates it's going to put our permits in jeopardy. Individuals can do what they want outside of the confines of Blazer Bash, we just need to keep the discussion separate.

I've created a new thread to get an informal head count of who is coming. Please go over hop in and post whos coming.

For those on the "F Grand County, I'm going somewhere else" idea, I'm thinking the opposite track might be a better one. The town generally wants us there and it's our land to use (not abuse of course) and we're following the procedures for using it. We need to show up, do our thing like we always do and enjoy it. If anything, this will prove their obstructionism doesn't work. I also believe that if we're going there to go 'wheeling as friends anyway, it's in their best interest to make the permitting process as clear and easy as possible because we don't HAVE to do the process. This whole thing can dissolve into an unorganized non event and they have no input, no statistics, no income, etc. Not everything in the permit process is bad and there are good reasons for some of the steps but if they go too far, groups are going to quit coming but the same individuals will show up.
