Blazer Campers- The not a Chalet thread. FWC, Hallmark, Phoenix units.

Not a blazer but I thought this was cool because I have never seen one on a Ramcharger/Trailduster. Traildusters are rare enough on their own. One of the guys on Ramchargercentral just scored this....Been sitting here for 20 years....

Ramcharger campers are by far the least seen of all the early FWC campers for the SUV’s. What you see most of by far are the Blazer version, then Bronco, then Scout and last the Ramcharger.

From what I’ve found the Ramcharger is closest dimensionally to the Blazer version. I’ve oven seen a couple that had the blazer name on the upper corner.

How tall can someone be before touching the ceiling when standing inside the camper?
My four wheel camper is just a touch over 6’ 1” with the top up. I’m 6’ and I just clear it standing up.

Another guy selling just the camper. It’s located near me if anyone is interested.

Holy high roof Batman! I’ve seen some get an extra foot but that’s almost cartoonishly high. Wow. I plan on adding 12-18” to mine but that seems like too much.

Ok I know this is the wrong thread, but I’ve been seriously considering a FWC for my low mileage Blazer and I need talked out of it because I need more projects like I need a hole in my head. My boys and I are really looking into more adventures with camping involved, and I was thinking about a slide in camper for my Duramax. But they beg to take the Blazer every time we go exploring anywhere.

I’d like to hear practical pros and cons of these setups.

Pros:
Super cool
Smaller foot print so you can camp in tent spots or way off grid.
Basic necessities

Cons:
Older trucks tend to need more maintenance
Cannot remove camper easily
No inside bathroom

I’ll add more as I think of them.

One con would be the fact that there is no rear seat in a Blazer with an FWC camper. There is the couch but it doesnt have seatbelts and wouldnt be safe. In theory you could rearrange the cabinetry and seating in the FWC to install a factory Blazer rear seat but that would be a substantial remodel of the interior of the camper and Im not sure how 3 people could sleep inside. Unless you are sleeping up top and the boys are in a tent ha! Or I guess you could have a bench seat in the front of the Blazer and that would solve a lot of problems.
I hear @Atl-atl has one he's redoing to flip. Nows the time to custom order features and color coordination
I do

Three in a blazer camper could be done without a major remodel. Considering two are kids. The older kid in the passenger seat. The second kid either sits in a jump seat mounted in the middle on the rear floor just behind the two front seats or you take the console out and put a jump seat and seat belt in there for him. Sleeping is simple. Put the two boys up top, you on the lower bunk. Lack of an inside toilet? Who cares. It’s boys. They want to take a leak outside anyways.

As far as not being able to remove the camper quickly, not a big deal to me. It’s ready to go whenever. It’s a small enough profile I can still just drive it like any other blazer. It’s not like a 1 ton truck with a huge slide in hard side camper that would be a chore to daily with the camper in the bed.

Look I’m not gonna talk anybody out of having one of these. But, I’m not sure I’d put it on your super nice K5. It’s not my choice.

Until the boys get bigger/taller you can totally make it work for sure. Once they do, you kick them into a tent outside.

Wait til you see my latest remodel when its done! Or better yet. Blazer campers are actually the same footprint as a modern day “Raven” I would looove to cut the bottom out of one of those and mount it on a super pristine/modernized/modded Blazer.

I’ve got at least a couple of pictures on my laptop of FWC blazer campers with windows on both sides, no interior cabinets at all and a factory Blazer folding back seat in place.

Fold the seat up and you would have a wide open footprint. Though storage would be loose. Sleeping arrangements would probably be the adult on the upper bunk and kids in sleeping bags on the floor after all the gear is unloaded to make room for them.

Three adults are not sleeping in one unless everyone is really comfortable being that close. But I don’t think they were intended to be used that way. A pair of adults and a kid sure. One adult and two kids, again sure.

So something that just dawned on me;
I could make my crawler have a removable rear cage section then slap on a camper when that’s the plan. Then I’d still have the front cab protected with a cage. And, I’d like to move my shifter and add in a jump seat. Then, I’d have modern fuel injection and plenty of power. Plus an 8.1 crawler hauler has totally never been done before :whistle2:

Not to shoot holes in the idea but put the camper on and take it off again. Then talk about if you want to put it on and take it off regularly.

These things are a little bit of a chore to put on even with camper jacks. Being lifted and larger tires adds to the challenge. We had to add a section to my jacks just to reach the besides of mine. I’ve had mine off three or four times in the process to acquire and build mine. I got better at it as I did it more but still it’s sketch balancing the camper over 5 feet high and threading the needle to back the truck under it. Then add a removable family cage into the list of stuff to do before and after.

Though if the camper was reconstructed with no cabinets on the left side and smart design on the family section of the cage configured to fit the camper. You would have have to keep it open I the center to facilitate standing up and getting to the upper bunk.

Though after taking harder trails with mine I’ve come to the reality trying to take harder trails with it and the camper surviving is probably not in the cards. It’s it’s not the weight of the camper it self it’s all the gear. Plus the rear bumper and the weight bias is rearward. I could insert multiple wheelie pics here as proof.

I’d rather build a dedicated trail rig I can beat on. Keep the crawlabago for weekend mountain runs that might be on a challenging trail but not hard core. Plus the desert trips too.

It’s food for thought. Not to say it couldn’t be done but I won’t push mine that hard anymore.
