Broke 60 shaft, water in the hubs, brake pads falling apart need major help

Re: Broke 60 shaft, water in the hubs, brake pads falling apart need major

Hey Brandon....Have you pulled the diff cover to get a look at the gear lube in there? Considering all the crud inside your hubs etc, it might be a good idea to pop the cover off and have a look. There are the two inner axle seals just outboard of the carrier. Pulling axles in and out often is hard on those seals, crud can be pushed from inside the tube past the seal and into the diff. If everything is good, you'd be out some gear lube and a new gasket/RTV....If it's not good, well, you'd still have to get that stuff, plus the seals. And alot more time to replace the seals since the carrier has to come out, but atleast you'd know everything is ok. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

yeah i pulled the cover and drained, it looked like there was some water in it also, but no signs of foreign objects, but looking through the axle tube, i dont see any seals in there, can you tell anything from this picture?

Marine grease is not rated for the heat of disc brake wheel bearings.

I used to run it until I discovered this.

Now I use a high quality disc brake wheel bearing grease.

The trick is to service them often, not to use some particular kind of grease.

I know!...But just a bit of water in there for a few months and they are toast unless you use the marine grease. I don't want to service my hubs after every wheeling trip (I am lucky if I service them once a year)...so I use the marine grease and the bearings will still last longer than if I used regular grease.
