budget beater - . . . HOLMES 220 single line boom wrecker install starting ..

smallish update :

got a few more hr's in on cleaning off the rest of the old skin off the ribs and spring and ram tabs today . . . . DAM does fisher build a beefy plow . . . its kicking my butt but when i am done it will be a like new 9ft blade setup .

was thinking skin over the next one but then looking at all the are's that rusted out on most plows i see you would have a nice skin but no frame strength . so its new blade or re-skin job or pay someone to plow your driveway or lot . . . . :rotfl::rotfl:

also decided not to dig out the ford rims / dis-mount tires / clean / paint / mount new tires . . i had 4 88-00 8 lug rims in good shape just blasted the faces and 3 coats of white paint . i will use my conversion lug nuts and DRW center caps for the winter tire/rim combo . then i just need 4 valve stems and mount the tires . it was the faster less B/S way to go in the end .

got my skin halfs today and started playing with gap's and placement of them to the frame . sure wish it had been 9ft 1 roll but the 2 4ft 6inch halfs will work and just burn it in up the center and grind smooth in the end .

new skin is 3/16" thick  :pimp:

Got the blade back from the blaster the other day again . Had him blast the mill scale off and give the paint some were to bond to .

Then today was 98% yellow done day . 4 coats on the front . 3 on the rest . The 3in roller made it go fast and easy . I have 1/3rd gal left so I can do a fresh coat on the 8ft blade for the season also .

Besides being a nice project to do. Was it that much cheaper to fix vs buying a new plow?

It came out really nice.

New plow setups now are stupid money and not as beefy . New FISHER mm2 9ft HD2 is over 6,000 last I checked new . And good used not whooped out is 3,500 - 4,500 all day .

Just a new replacement trip shoe on the bottom is over 800 if you can find them for these old units . The blade main unit O.M.G that would be crazy money .

I have around 1k in the rebuild and service parts . My time is my time and not counted. And I LOVE to fix up old stuff .

Some guys have adapted these blades to the newer setups cause there more weight and stay down better .

@KirsL

all the black is painted today minus the huge a-frame sector unit . i kind of forgot it and also would have had to open up another can of paint so i said screw it for today and will get it monday .

but the wear edge has a few coats of black . the 4 trip spring bars also got some black after i sent them threw my blast cabinet . the top rubber pinch plate has a few also . and i hit the wear edge bolt heads just cause i could .

screw it . gloves back on and cracked open a half empty semi-gloss black jar i had . . . all the painting is DONE :saweet:

did learn a neat trick for next time . . . glossy is shinny all the time . if your brushing and rolling like me on these parts the shinny can blur your sight a bit and you miss spots . i found this out by accident and me being cheep today and using the paint i had on hand .

TRICK : use semi or low gloss black as a base coat then when happy with few coats make the top coat the gloss . helps not blind you and make you miss spots .

:eek1: wow! I knew they were pricey but that's just crazy!

@KirsL if I was to go buy a new plow it would prob be a Fisher XLS . It's a 8ft wide blade but expands to 10ft wide . Also its ends can angle to make a semi box pusher or just the one out front to keep snow from rolling off as you do big plow jobs . . And I recently seen a version that starts at 8ft 6in and goes to 11ft wide . They offer it in a stainless steel skin option . And there 1,050 lbs to 1,140 lbs in weight .

We don't get a ton of snow most of the time at my place depending on the year but I wouldn't mind picking up a small dump truck with a plow already on it. Seems like the most economical way to get a plow rather than just going and buying one.

NEVER buy a plow truck for sale used I believe. . To rusty and crappy on the underside .

I always buy a clean truck and ADD the plow .

Turning wrenches for years I got to see way to many clean looking plow trucks underside and the crap hiding under there .

While I have seen the proof of your statement on some of your other posts, out here the used stuff is still pretty decent. Not having the humidity ALL year long to keep the rot going makes a difference.

Nice job on the rehab!
