budget beater - . . . HOLMES 220 single line boom wrecker install starting ..

I like the ass up stance better! Lookin good though.
oh its still a hair up yet with the 1inch block out . trust me i dont like the level look my self . little bit going on in the butt is a good thing .

but if i left it were it was when i hook the plow up it would be way off more . even with ballast weight .

few little tiny mods today but will make a huge improvement .

throttle arm cable hook up extension custom made .

i did a 7/8" extension for my combo of a stock cable / modified tbi bracket to vortec 2 rear intake holes for bolt down .the lower / big hole is 23/64" to just fit snug over the flare of the arm . the upper is 1/4" for the throttle stud to fit . the index / anti rotation scew is 5/32" and had to open up the arm hole for it just a hair over what holley had .

i had to also remove the pedal from the cab and bend it just a tweek around 1/2" were the cable clicks in so the pedal has more throw .

then i had to do the old school rubber hose trick on the th400 kick down switch . first was 3/8" then a around 4 wraps of electric tape to take of the slop of a chunk of new 3/4" heater hose .

i now have full throttle AND th400 kick down switch function .

this also gave me a good hole for the return spring . yes as stiff as they are they need one . and the th400 switch pic only has the 3/8" on in the pic but you get the idea .

Loving this build. Reminds me a lot of my turd.

How much lift is on the front?

Last edited:
best guess since i dont know the brand / lift of the front springs and i took 2 leafs per side out from the orignal 6 leafs . . . . i say 3" ish

rear is front hangers for rear springs turned in to home brew flip kit with 6" shackles on 22-547 stock 56" springs at 2600lbs each .

tires are 255/85/16 = tall skinny like stock but 33.3 " .

so today was rear drive line angle figure out am job with the help of the guys over at off road design . https://ck5.com/forums/threads/drive-line-angle-help.335416/

then i took the rear shaft to the drive line shop to get re-tubed .

next was hit up the parts store for a dana 60 front pinion seal mine is yucky . . .

then i did the 203/205 fluid fill up . also swapped out the speedo gear for the 205 . for some reason years ago i installed a yellow 5 tooth drive gear . . WAY TO FAST . so i swapped the yellow for a red 7 tooth much better then with a 19 tooth driven gear and a speedo reducer unit of 1: 0.909 i should be right in the ball park thanks to @Greg Ducato helping me on the math . i also found a nice little handy dandy speedo cable extender of 20" that worked perfectly for the length i needed .

also made the throttle arm cable ext and kick down switch mod above .

she is getting closer by the day .

well lets just say today was a step back for about 1hr . . . i should have installed the front leaf spring bushing kit before i put the plow frame on cause then i could have cheated . but nooo i had to get ahead of my self . this cost me 1hr as i had to drop the whole front axle/leaf spring combo and roll it back as it come down to clear the front leaf eye bushings past the plow frame . oh well there in / torqued / lubed / and done on the list .

next was the front 60 pinion seal that was leaking a bit so she got a new one . had to heat her up a bit to break the rust bond loose even the air impact didnt like its grip .

started to do the rear disk brake swap install . took my 16 lug studs over to the local machinist buddy to cut the heads down a little so they fit correct in the rotors . hubs just need a good clean / seal install . also need to install the 4.10 gear set and gov-loc back in the rear with a new pinion yoke seal and solid shim kit for the old crush sleeve .

then once thats done i can i think :surepal: try maybe for a test drive in the hood :dunno::confused::burnout:

got my disk brake stuff started for the rear . need to hit the hardware store monday am . nocked out the bad pinion support 3rd bearing , and i have the new one already to install . cage was broken and a roller fell out when i was checking it . almost 40 bucks later she be fixed .

front shocks are on and inplace . stering dampener needs to have its tab welded back on the dana 60 front . cut the old one off years ago when i use to run the 2 shock setup side by side . but now i am on the cheep and using what i have . and i saved this almost new aftermarket dampener shock years ago and a extra mount so back on it goes .

my 5* pinion wedge shims showed up today from offroad design . need to get that combo fixed up real easy then clamp the rear in for good . still need to bolt the box down but i forgot to tighten the bolts for the shackle in the homebrew flip first tho . so i need to lift it up real quick yet . then she be ready to bolt down for good .

every day is more off the list and closer to test drive . cant wait to try the trans now that greg ducato fixed me up with my modified govener unit and red stripe modulator , then my transgo shift improver kit . the old 100% stock setup was blaa . all in 3rd gear by 22 mph . now greg said i should realy like it .

amazing how much gook can build up in a mid 40k mile axle . . . cleaning the 14ff tubes out today in prep for disk brake install and stuff the gears back in from doing a pinion seal swap and general check over from sitting for so long .

i had to use 3 chunks of wire insulation to connect 4 brake cleaner spray straws to reach all the way in after i used a washer on the end of a 3/8" threaded rod to get most of it .

The last one I did I was pulling sand out for like an hour each side. It was full of crap

this was the original 14ff from the STUBBY build i scrapped . the truck had 44k miles on it . but it did a lot of sitting before i got it . i didnt get much major junk just a lot of slime and the normal amount of casting filings .

she is clean and ready for guts to go in as soon as i get my modified wheel studs back from the machine shop . then press them in the rotor/hubs and install .

today was clean he axle day / hubs / bearings / pinion seal & crush sleeve eliminator kit install. didnt look like much done but boy was it a lot of behind the scenes work .

had to step back and let the pinion seal and solid spacer sit for a bit the thing is kicking my ass for some reason . https://ck5.com/forums/threads/real-weird-14ff-pinion-setup-problem.335460/

did manage barley even had to play a bit to get these on the axle and done . just waiting for the rear wheel studs to come back from my buddy who has a lathe to cut the heads down for the seat area in the rotors . some guys just smack them in , but i prefer to have them correct .

and last how about a ruffstuff diff cover in powder coat silver/chrome shine . . ?

oh ya and dumb ass forgot and installed the fisher plow frame before he changed the leaf spring bushings and bolts out for the new stuff from ord . had to drop the complete axle with springs all as one and roll it back as i lifted to clear the plow frame to spring eye on the front . took 1hr compared to 20 min or so to change bushings out . :doah::whistle::surepal:

oh ya and my huge shop is a crap hole . . . :doah::1zhelp:

What are those backing plates from for your rear discs? Is this rear end out of something that ran a driveline parking brake like a step van or something since there isn't one inside the rotor.

old school disk brake conversion kit a friend use to make years ago .

spacers for the backing plates to bolt up and then the rotor on and 1/2 or 3/4 ton calipers . i tend to like the 1/2 ton size for this combo with 1ton master / hydroboost and adjustable prop valve combo to dial it in .

stock gm 3/4 ton backing plates from a dana 44 70's style full plate design . newer would work also . machine the center hole open a bit bigger to fit over the 14ff spindle .
3/4 ton ford f250 4x4 ttb front end rotors . 80's-90's style .
gm calipers 1/2 or 3/4 ton .
custom spacer rings .

bolt it up and go . just have to clock the backing plate were you want the caliper to be and drill 4 new holes .

no parking brake system on this combo unless you use caddy calipers if they even fit the 4x4 front backing plates .

i used this combo before on my 1st mud truck for years no problems.

Oh cool, yeah I thought that looked like a front backing plate but wasn't sure. I've just got the Ruff Stuff brackets with front GM rotors and 1/2 ton calipers out back and 3/4 ton calipers up front.

rear axle is done and filled with fluids . tires went on before end of the night in the shop .

and this little guy tried messing me up on the pass side axle flange . wire wheeled clean and even got anti-seize . . . then spotted this when i tried turning in a wobbly head of the bolt . :rotfl:

still using what i have on hand to finish this truck .

29 inch chunk of 2x2x3/16 wall square tube .
2 old frame brackets for something .
2 old 99-up 3/4 or 1ton lower control arm shock mounts left over from a lift/level kit install.

then 2 chunks of square tube notched to fit the 14ff tube .
2 old shock stud mounts .

then 2 bilstein shocks i got from a member a bit ago i forgot just who tho sorry.

fab it all together and get the new bolt in upper shock crossmember unit and 2 mounts on the axle . we will see if it holds up o.k.
