build thread Update: 5/27 Blazen Bumper on with B52's 42's all on

well today i got both sets of 64's torn apart, sanded down and painted and took a couple leafs from each to make the set im gona run in the truck. im running 5 long leafs including the main leaf (each leaf is about 2-3" shorter than the one above it) and then im going to run the overload upside down so the leafs will be able to get completely flat before they hit the overload. im just waiting for the EZ inch from kert to show up and i can get them bolted together and in the truck. also have the frame ready for the b52's and shackle hangers once they arrive as well.

i didnt have the camera at the house, but i didnt get a chance to tear into the 60 to pull the caliper brackets off, but im planning to do that tomorrow, so ill get pictures.
fixed it for ya ;)

Update: back for the weekend for easter and have been working on it today, and probably will into the night.

i got the stock 64" spring packs together with the ez-inch from kert. the angle with the stock springs isnt the best since it was setup to run with the lifted springs i was running before, but it will do for now. they are super soft should flex like crazy. i also put the overload on upside down to lower the rate (didnt remove cuz i wanted the extra lift) so we'll see how that turns out. lift is comprised of home-made shackle flip, 7.5" shackles (lowering shackles off an IFS chevy) and 3 leafs (including main leaf) from a k1500 and 2 leafs from a k3500. based on how the tires sit, im thinkin maybe 7" lift? i have no idea, but doesnt really seem that much lower than when i have 5" lifted 64's in the back before.

i threw in a 14bff i got from my buddy's junkyard to get it on its feet until i get the time/money to rebuild the 70HD. i tried to figure out the ratio in it, and the pinion yoke only spun twice when the one side did 1 complete turn...it doesnt make any sense:confused: any insight on what the issue might be? the axle came out of a late 70's k20 suburban.

for now im gona run the 39.5" boggers til the 70 goes in and the 60 gets the DRW hubs.

next is to put the b52's on and get the front back on its feet.

To check the gear ratio you have to spin both tires if you have an open diff (unlocked). Or I am pretty sure you can just double the pinion rotations if you only spun one tire. It is because you were also spinning the spider gears.

yea i thought id have to double it, so i must have 3.73's cuz it was just shy of 2 rotations, thanks

Rainy Day 5/8 update: well i got the b52's on and relocated the rear hanger using the bottom front hole as a guide (like most people use) and used the 4" 52" TC springs (i removed the overload) and used the 7.25" shackles from Kert at diy4x. i also redrilled the perches 1" so the axle is about 3.5" forward. i got kert to make me some spring plates that didnt have the 45* back so that there wouldnt be any interference with the tie-rod being behind the axle, and it came out great. i also got everything hooked up and the front tires back on. the truck now drives, but still doesnt have shocks on it yet. the suspension is very soft, so hopefully the shocks will help that for street driving. the 39.5 boggers that are on it right now are temporary, ive got the iroks on H1's in the shed, im just waiting to get the DRW 60 hubs and get the 70HD ready to go in.

also, theres been a change in plans, im not going to be using a 241, but instead the triple stick doubler that ive got in the garage, which has the WMS 203 rangbox with 3.1 gears in it, so itll be a 4spd doubler with 1:1, 2:1, 3.1:1 and 6.2:1:D. im also planning to run a CV rear shaft with 1410's at the yoke of the 70hd and use d60 ears to make a 1480 joint for the front, also with 1410 at the yoke of the d60.

anyways, how are my shackle angles? i can adjust the front pretty easily with the b52's. i think they might be a little on the steep side. what do you guys think?

thanks for the compliments, itll look much better when i put the rest of the front clip back on. im also going to have to modify the mounts on the blazenoffroad tube bumper i have because the b52 brakets are in the way. once i get the spacers on and the iroks on there it'll look better as well.

5/23 update: i got my DRW hubs that i bought from a member on here and painted them, and put in new bearings, races and seals as well as new rotors and wheel studs. i only had time to do the driveside before it got too dark (as you can tell from the pics), but ill post some better pics tomorrow when its daylight out. i also put on one of the h1's to see how they would fit, and im very happy with the stance. i cant wait to get all of the tires on it

Wow its lookin good, it sure is a nice feeling to get it on the road again, i just got my stepside on the road, but the year of sitting ate the fron wheel bearings

Tom

got the other hub and tire on, here some pics of the stance. for comparison purposes the rear tires are 39.5x18 boggers on 16.5x12 rims and front is DRW hubs, 42x14 iroks on 12b h1's. im gona put the rear spacers on for now and get the rear tires on shortly. (i know the driverside tire is on backwards:doah:, i put it on last night and could tell til this morning)

Nice buildup. Subscribed. I have a quick question, could be a dumb one though...on the reverse crossover steering, what are the advantages? Better engine crossmember clearance? I'm sure it's better for the tie rod. Would hydro-assist basically hookup the same?

Okay sorry, 3 quick questions. :D

well i wanted to go hi-steer, but since my axle is 3.5" forward, the draglink would cross the tie-rod and cause issues. with the tie-rod behind the axle, there is no worry about the draglink getting caught up and interfering with the tie-rod. im going to be adding the hydro-assist within the next couple weeks as well, and basically it hooks up the same, you just need to build a "tower" on the axle so that the ram will sit level with the tie-rod.
