Burnt burb resurrection (It's mine again!)

Not wanting to hijack op thread. I try to be a man of honor and pay my debts. It may take me a while now but it is my debt so I will pay it. Like said why freck with the powers to be.

the powers that be generally win anyway:dunno: after thinking about it for a while I figured selling the 5.3 isn't solving anything. so ill keep it and ill have to do this differently. looks like im going to have to read the threads about modifying the harness real well because that will save me money by dong it myself. and little things like modding the exhaust and such I can handle easy. ill have to get the motor mounts and any other small adapters, etc. piece by piece.

something I wondered is the pcm. everything iv'e read says itll need flashed or programed or whatever..... if its the one from the original motor and im not modding the motor at all why would that need done?

and as a quick list ill need,

1. flexplate spacer on back of the crank.
2. motor mount adapters.
3. and only a few assorted thread adapters for gauge stuff. (im going full mechanical gauges when I do it)

is that all that's really needed for the swap?? I know theres always hoses and stuff but that's normal with any motor swap.

another option I thought of for simplification is to sell the 5.3 and put the money into a decent cam, JY vortec heads, and carb/intake swap on my current motor. after all, it is just my play toy-project anyway. :dunno:
that would save me from having to come up with anymore money for it and still give me some good power. the ls realistically is gonna cost me at least $300-500 more minimum to install by the time its done. I could sell it for $800 probably. that's pretty close to all I need for the above mentioned idea
originally I wanted the 5.3 to get mpgs out of it for traveling purposes... in all reality that's what I have a rav4 and my 05 with 5.3 for. im not looking for a 500hp beast, and I know the ls is really a better platform. but im just weighing options. my current motor actually has less miles than the 5.3 I think too.

You have to at least get the anti-theft stuff turned off in the ecm for it to even fire. Also if you don't have cats or rear O2 sensors then you need to turn those off. The tranny tuning with have to be modified for a 700r4. Also if you're running electric fans you can use the ecm to control them. Besides you can tune the engine as well to get a few more ponies out of it too

that makes sense:waytogo: I was wondering

To add to your list of things you need, a fuel pump and fuel lines/adapters.

And I don't think I could ever go back to carb after fuel injection.

I kinda feel the same way cause of ease of use, cold starts, etc. But I don't have much around here for steep grades to worry about. and its not a DD. I just hate to leave the 5.3 sitting on a stand for another year till I get enough stuff rounded up to do it. I'm finally on shifts at my new job so that's more money coming in, but id rather pump money back into the loan I have to put on the burb. I'm just confused about it all right now. ive had some very impressive carbed motors that had instant response and super easy cold starts. so I know its possible. my kids 72 is one of them.

maybe when I get the loan for the tax deal I can throw enough extra on it to get the 5.3 in:thinking:

FOCK I hate decisions:haha:

well it happened finally....... I noticed a weird spot on my rocker panel on the passenger side and touched it........ put my finger right through it:doah: the whole area looks like I could push lightly and bust about a 3-4" hole in it easy.... time for sliders:whistle:

got a pic this morning. I seen some small bubbling a while back but hadn't noticed the rust bleeding till I seen the hole.

im gonna try and fix it temporarily for now. then do a full cut out rocker slider with built in steps later when it inevitably gets worse.

that's a LONG way off. I don't think ill win the rust battle with a square body. I want to weld in a repair panel and stuff but I consider that temp. itll do it again. and the slider thing is because eventually this will be a full on hard core fun truck. like a few others on this site.

well.... I'm definitely putting my 5.3 on craigslist.... I'm not in a position to do it and may not be for a LONG time.... on top of my taxes to pay I have to cover about $4k out of my pocket for my surgery:doah: this thing is my play toy and I have the CC for a DD so the money out of the 5.3 will go towards hopping this up a little with a cam, intake, vortec heads, and a Qjet. way more doable at the moment and My plans for this burb include an 8.1 in the future anyway so why mod for the 5.3 just to tear it out later.
I wanted to do this bad...... but the extra money and things need to finish it just isn't gonna happen. im pretty certain I can get enough out of the 5.3 to cover most all of what I need for this other direction. coming up with $100- 200 more isn't gonna be real hard but it'll take me a couple months still. it is what it is I guess.

I already have a gasket set layin around. and I have to check around the bone yards here but I believe it wont be hard to find a useable set of vortec heads. If I find a decent set im not even gonna have them gone through.. ill just bolt them on for now. they can be pulled off at a later date and rebuilt when things even back out around here. I may be able to find a used Qjet through a few buddies of mine and if so Ill rebuild that and seal the bottom bolt holes (common issue with them) myself. that may save enough money to help with getting and possibly rebuilding the heads. I still have a large cap HEI dizzy layin around my garage somewhere so that will help too. I know a guy near me that can tune a Qjet like none other so ill take it to him when its all together and have him work his magic with the carb/timing. he did my kids truck for like $50-60.

I do have these nice heavy duty ORD parts to put in as soon as im cleared for 100% duty and no weight restriction. couple weeks :D

That's too bad. But man, living in cold country I just can't see getting rid of the fuel injection.
