carps 89 K5 build (how not to put a k5 on a trailer)

I got it off of ebay actually. It's a pretty good kit. I like it. It doesn't come with new shirt rails though so you have to mod your current ones. But it's not really that hard. I did mine with an angle grinder and a pair of vice grips (though it's not the prefered way, but it's all I have :D). Here's a link to an article Willyswanter wrote about doing it. It's pretty clear

I don't think my motor is a vortec as far as I know. But if it is I like it. I've had no problems with except for a bad distributor cap. It's still stock except for throttle body spacer, some Hedmans, now some roller rockers but I've got no complaints

i think youre gonna give up drilling that spring after you dull your first thirty bits. lol

Yeah, it's the orig motor. Only has 125K on it. It's worked well so far, no complaints. I have figured out that I have a rocker arm a little too tight now and I gotta readjust them when I get a chance.

Is spring steel pretty much a beotch to drill? I've got a couple bits that were like $15 and $20 a piece that have lasted really well so I'll see how they hold up I guess.

I know you what your leaves to be in order in a spring pack but what would be the downside to running that addaleaf in the pack like that? Is it really gonna hurt anything?

you want your aal to be in between a leaf that shorter and longer. with no huge gaps like you pictured. also they dont touch the eye of the spring

Don't get what you're talking about by it not touching the eye of the spring:confused: Like i said before I know where they're supposed to go but I couldn't figure out where to put this one since doesn't particularly match the rest of the 56 pack. It was either gonna be too long or too short in the pack depending on where I put it so I decided on too short (see previous posts). I was just wondering how it's detremental (if I spelled that right:D) to the spring pack run like that?

I guess I'll go stock up on drill bits:crazy:

It's not hard at all to install the zero rates, but it was kind of a pain drilling the 1in holes in the steel shims so I could get to the alignment bolt to tighten it. Normally this isn't a problem when you run shims but I didn't think about how I was gonna tighten the leaf alignment bolt with a shim covering it :D

I'm actually running ORDs zero rates in the rear and I've got Kerts in the front :D. There's no difference truthfully. But I will say that Kert's came with better bolts BTW, but other than that they're identical

it's not really a big difference, I just liked the shorter offset bolt you can run that came with the DIY4X kit. The ORD came with a regular bolt and an alignment bolt (the rounded head like most alignment bolts) that you have to cut down if you're gonna run them offset. The DIY4x kit came with a short alignment bolt and a long alignment bolt so you don't have to cut one down to run it offset. Like I said, not a big difference just more ease of use. Hope what I said makes sense :D

yes it does. i'll probably use the longer alignment bolt because im trying to get some leaves added to my superlift rear leaf springs so i can haul things without my rear end sagging

I gotcha. Either or is great. I can't remember if one was cheaper than the other but I would probably guess Kert's got ORD beat

Got some work done today and friday. I got it rolling at least. HOORAY! The new tranny and everything seems to be doing working great except for the fact my damn K5 is idling at like 1600 rpm preventing it from shifting easily out of neutral:mad:. I gotta figure out how to set the idle down. Somebody told me in a thread sometime back, I just gotta go back and find it. Other than burning a spark plug wire and being a little bouncy with no front shocks:D it was great. Glad to have it back rolling.

I've just thrown the gears, axles and hubs back on to have it rolling for the time being. My good friend who's gonna set my gears had to run out of town cuz his daughter had a subarachnoid bleed on the brain:eek1:. Evidently she had a blood vessel in her brain that just randomly burst and she had emergency surgery. She's surprisingly making a full recovery, coming from complete paralysis on the right side, and is supposed to come back home in a couple weeks. So I have no problem waiting on him.

Other than that. Not too much I guess. Gotta get the bottom shock tabs welded on the front axle so I can have the shocks hooked up. Gonna try to get it to the shop to get the new exhaust put on Tuesday (depends if I get this damn idle fixed). Gonna go ahead and give the old engine a tune up with plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc.... I did mount my DPI sliders this evening but it was too dark for pics. I'm gonna wash the old girl tuesday since it's been a long time and I'll get some pics.

I believe I wound up with about 7in of total lift. I'm happy with it. The rear is about 1/2in higher and it's obvious I'm gonna have to :hack:the front fenders some more. Gonna try and do it cleanly this time, but we'll see.

Note: I forgot how damn loud open headers are. My old lady neighbor down the street asked me if there was something wrong with my truck cuz it was so loud:D, I told her it was fine and won't be loud for long. She said it scared her p**sy, eeerrrr, cats:haha::haha:

if your truck is idling that high look for a vacuum leak.

well, it's always idled that high. Ever since I've owned it. Never really had a problem with it before but I don't think it's a vacuum leak.

Good looking truck. Keep up the work. Let us know what you find out on the idle.

well its gotta be gettin more air from somewhere to be idling that high. same with fuel, can you tell if its running lean or rich?? there is not enough adjustment for it be that outta wack. its still TBI aint it??
