ck5 alaska trip-july 1 2011 to july 11 2011

With as many miles as it is I bet we could meet somewhere. All the Oregon, Washington guys all the Idaho (me) and Utah guys

According to map quest I would go up I-15 but this is going to be a once in a lifetime thing so a couple (or even a couple hundred) extra miles to meet up with friends isn't going to be a big deal

nope, we need to just get a car hauler, a bad ass dodge diesel dually and put like all the NW rigs on it and haul 'em all up there on that... :D that would be all kinds of cool. I call shotgun... when I'm not driving. :haha:

Well kind of working on a semi right now LOL could take 3 other rigs with us if it works out alright

A Semi is the first thing I thought about when I thought of a tow rig to Alaska. I friend of mine shipped a Mustang to Arizona and it was only a couple hundred bucks...

Well, we need to do this in 10' or 11' cause the worlds gonna come to an end in 2012 remember. It might be the only trip my rig will see when it's done before we are all gone  :haha: :haha::D

Can it be other people too? None chevy none ck5ers? My friend would love to do this too. Jeep with 35's though. Am I in trouble for asking

My rig is getting 38's from the get go so I'm all good :D.

min requirements

38" mud tires-

1 locker

winch prefered-min 2 winch rigs to 1 non winch rig

gas for 300 miles off road-figure it at 4 mpg-thats what we have been averaging

tow points front and rear

recovery strap

spare or means to fix a torn sidewall

shovel

high lift

seat belts for each person riding in the rig

first aid kit

gloves for winching

tent-unless planning to sleep in your rig

basic tools and any specialty tools needed for
your rig

if open topped rig must have roll bar

cb radio

recomended items
spare parts*************LOTS
rain gear
warm clothes-can get in the 20-40s at night
flash light and batterys
tarp to cover tent

prepare for bad weather and cold temps.

heres the minumum stuff. as the trips are planned we might add more stuff.also prep the rigs for deep water crossings.if we decide to cross the mclaren river it can be 5 ft or more deep.other crossings average up to 4 ft deep in places plus the hidden holes.:haha:
the tire size could be dropped to 35 IF the rig is locked FRONT AND REAR and has a winch.but the tires would need to be a very aggressive tire-ie boggers etc.no standard mud tires and def NO ALLTERRAINS.
we have run fullsized rigs inthis area on 35s and they tend to just sink in the holes.
i realize a trip like this would be the trip of a life time for a lot of you and i would want to beable to cover as much ground back there as we can with out always being stuck.
one trail we took took us 13 hrs to go 12 miles. 1st 4 miles took 9 hrs.
i do have extra sets of tires thta could be used 37s and wide 35s that will fit 1/2 tons.if your running a 1/2 ton locked front you will need to bring 2 complete sets of front shafts because you not be able to climb monument in 2wd.and the idea of being chained to a rig climbing that hill is a scary thought.

as far as hunting it is opne black and brown bear season in that area year round.you will need to get with fish and game to see what the out of state requirments are.most of the rivers and creeks have dolly vardon and trout and greylings in them.plusthere ptarmigans if you like bird.
canada has some strick gun rules.check before you bring them-wouldnt want to lose tham at the border.if needed i can get a gun dealers info so you could send them up threw them.

Brown/grizzly requires a guide for non-resident hunters. Black bears are open to non-residents but require a non-resident license and a black bear tag. Licenses are for the year from Jan. 1st through December 31st but the regulatory year is from July 1st through June 30th so whatever regulations are in effect on June 30th could possibly change on July 1st.

I'll finish my buggy this winter and will have a good bit of time to get it tuned and make any necessary changes before this run happens and as always Diana's will be ready to go.

So........If a person were to drive/fly up there, what would he need to bring to be a passeneger for this shindig?

I could either fly to closest spot and rent a car to get to the meeting spot.......or if I just needed tent, clothes, some gear, etc. I could pack up for a sweet trip on my motorcycle to alaska:laugh:

another thing.there is no drinking while on the trail.at camp is fine but not during the day while on the trail.this is a 0 tolerance rule.
i know some people feel a couple during the day while wheeling is fine but i dont and the people i wheel with dont either.
just posting this up so if people have a issue with this they can make other plans, dont want a trip ruined for people that will be traveling several thousands of miles to do this run.

i can pick people up at the airport in anchorage.its only 50 miles or so from my house.i have plenty of room for rigs and tow rigs before and after the trip.

how many would like to do a wheeling trip up here and how many could bring a rig to do it?i know there would be plenty of open seats for people that cant bring a rig.
im thinking in 2010 or 2011 to give people time to prep for the trip.rig specs would need to be min 38" tire with at least 1 locker and preferably a winch.i could plan a 250-300 mile off road trip over a 7-10 day time frame in the eureka area.lots of good fishing and wheeling and also get to see some of the best sites in the country.
thoughts ideas etc?
if this is something enough people are interested in doing i can start getting this end set up.i have a pretty much fully equipted shop here at home for repairs before or after the run.
I would love to go, but don't ever plan on having a rig that big, especially that soon. Maybe there could be something else I could do to participate in this expedition.

I got to thinking more about this trip last night while trying to get some sleep. Maybe we can get one of the staff members of Petersen's 4 Wheel & Off Road magazine to come along to shoot pics of the trip and maybe make an article about the trip for the magazine. If it ends up being editor Rick Pewe, it might give him an idea on where to go for one of the Ultimate Adventures.

Very good idea.

Given the MASSIVE opportunity that this trip could be and given my bfgoodrich mt km2 35's will not be sufficient I am going to have to rethink my build here.

Can you tell I really want to go! :D

What would your opinion be on a set of these tires? would they do OK and not hold the group up?

bfgoodrich MT KM2 38x14.50R17 or is the MT KM2 tread pattern not aggressive enough?

This sounds like more of a hard core expedition guys trip, rather then a family fun trip, is this correct? I would like my family to possible come but I KNOW my woman is not going to want to tent it for more then a couple of days. 20's/30's at night is pretty cold for tenting, been there done that totally doable, but still cold. Any hotel possibilities? Were you talking 7 to 10 days of wheelin, no civilization during that time? Trying to figure just how much to prepare gear wise and if family should go.
