colbystephens' build and wheelin' thread! Post 289: my NEW truck body!!!

where are you in oregon, billyl? maybe we could do something together for ya! ;)

I live in Goldhill so i am kinda far away from you but i appreciate the offer though.

well, last week i was trying to get my rig ready for an expedition camping trip for this last weekend. so i pulled apart my passenger side hub, and made a mess of things. now the adjusting sleeve is stripped in the removal direction, so i can't get the sucker out to re-do my ball joints! now my steering is scary at best - the whole front end of the truck shakes violently when i hit a bump on the road. :eek1:

the only idea i've come up with is that i could go to a junk yard and get a new knuckle and cut the current knuckle off - but that doesn't really help me remove the adjusting sleeve, so i'm not sure what the best way to take care of this might be... aside from a dana 60. can i use a knuckle from a 10bolt on my 76 dana 44? any other thoughts?

then, i also needed to replace my starter. so i picked up a sexy gear reduction starter for the 6.5 diesel application.

well, i installed that sucker and it turned out that i needed to shim it. i didn't know anything about shims - so as the engine spun the starter round and round i was at a loss for how to fix the problem. finally, after re-installing the starter 3 times i learned about the shims. i put in 2 shims - still needed more. i put in 6 shims, needed less. i put in 4 shims, needed less, i put in 2 shims, still needed less . i took out all the shims, reinstalled, and still it won't reach the flywheel. the teeth on the starter and the flywheel look fine. i'm going to give it another shot in the next day or two.

so, this was friday and i was supposed to leave friday nite. i decided to forget the starter and bump-start the engine while we were camping. i figured i could just park on hills. well, we bumpstart it to get it running and then it turns out that i have no lights! so in a frantic panic to get ready for my trip, i hacked up my wiring  to farmer-fix all my problems. got it all going and went out on the road to find the problem i talked about in my first paragraph. :( so we called off the camping trip.

so, current task is that i'm in the middle of removing all my old wiring harness and swapping in one which i got from ck5er, chopped&bobbed77burb. i've got my old one out, and decided i'd swap in a decent pedal set up which i got from muddytazz. now i might swap out my steering column for the one that muddytazz gave me too... this project is getting bigger and bigger. anyway, i've got my old pedal assy. out and my steering column out. just gotta reinstall the wiring, new steering and pedals. :p:

fun. fun. :doah:

So what's up with Old Navy/Abercrombie & Fitch pose holding the starter?

Old Navy, Old Navy, Old Navy, Old Navy performance starter! :D

Anyway - yes a 10 bolt knuckle will fit a Dana 44. (I know a Dana 44 knuckle will fit on a 10 bolt - that's what I'm running)

will a 1/2 ton fit the 3/4 ton?

Yes - knuckles are the same for 1/2 & 3/4 ton for both 10 bolt & D44 - only disadvantage you are going to have is when you want to go cross-over (which will be soon the way you do things) the 10 bolt knuckle isn't flat -and can't be used for crossover steering.

well, i won't be doing crossover for a long time. when i do, it'll be on a dana 60. i'm not too interested in investing much cash into this 44 for that very reason.

Dude im still confused. Is it the one that is in the inner-C on the axle or one of the wheel bearing preload adjuster nuts? Either way i dont see how cuting the knuckle off is going to help. What your plan?

let's talk wiring.

ok, so like i said, i started pulling out all my old wiring and i've started to swap in the new stuff. i've got some questions. can you identify any of the following for me?

1. what is the pink wire coming out of the middle of the fuse box? what do i connect it to? my original fuse box had the pink wire, but it wasn't connected to anything.

2. what is, and do i connect to, the orange connection north of my thumb and the blue-green connection south west of my hand?

thesepics010.jpg

3. what is this, and what does it connect to? it comes out of a wiring set that goes through my firewall, just to the right of where the fuse box is.

thesepics011.jpg

4. what is this, what does it do, what do i connect it to?

thesepics012.jpg

5. black, grey, white wires - cut and not connected to anything. what do they belong to?

thesepics012.jpg

6. this brown wire comes out of the same set of wires that connect to my fan-speed control. what is it, what does it do, what's it connect to?

thesepics014.jpg

7. question about cruise control and vss. i connected my vss and my cruise worked 3 times on one trip there after i connected it. the 4th time i tried to use it, it didn't work and hasn't ever since. what should i replace? the yellow box? for what it's worth, it was all in one set of driving - no stopping or shutting off of the engine between uses.

8. ok, question about brake light sensors. the one on the right is one of two i originally had in my truck. it has some sort of vacuum line coming off of it. on my original pedal set up, there's 2 places to install these things and each controls one side of the brake lights. in this image, the sensor on the left came with the wiring harness i got from bruce (chopped&bobbed...). this one is much easier for me to use because it is only one sensor for the brake lights and my new pedal assy. only has one hole to mount one brake sensor. it's also more compact and easier to deal with. can i use this one instead and do away with the one that has the vacuum sensor on it?

9. one final question for the nite. i now have a second fuse box left over. i was thinking of rewiring this sucker to run my auxilary things, i.e. lights, air, etc. is this a good idea? how would i go about it? any thoughts, input on the topic?

anyone have any thoughts about my previous post?

so i've got some more questions. :) anyone know how many amps the GP system draws? anyone know how many amps the fuel solenoid on the fuel pump draws?

i'm installing a circuit block to run all my accessories out of, and want to know which fuses to use.

No idea...although it must be a fair amount as they're run off a relay.

Rene

makes sense.

is there a way i can figure out how much amperage the fuel pump draws?

Do you run a Q-Jet wanna be FI like I do on my '85?

I was having big problems with my ignition and I took it to a shop...they put new plugs, a new distributor and ran a new wire for the electric choke...that pink wire in the first pic looks like where they ran mine to....anyways my problem was solved so maybe somewhere along the line someone did that on your truck too...So you can't see where it goes after it pops through the firewall?
