Considering a Suburban Tow Rig

You're right about the gmt400 suburbans. They're basically the same truck just different spring rates, gear ratios available and I think the rears also. The 1500 diesel got the 9.5 14bolt semi-floater. The 2500 diesel I think got the 14bff for both 2wd and 4wd. It's possible only the 2wds got the full-floater. I know the older ones were that way.

GMT400 3/4-ton 4x4 Suburbans could have the 10.5" 14BFF. Not sure if all of the diesels did or if it was offered as a towing package (or something). But they are out there

So in conclusion, I could consider a 1/2 ton suburban if it was wicked clean, because we are mostly talking about rear spring rates and possibly a 14bsf instead of a ff rear axle on the 6.5.

There were some weird 6lug diesels too of that generation. Like the 92-94 2 door blazer(pre-Tahoe) that could be had with a 6.5.

Would the gmt400 1/2 ton suburban with the 6.5 have a 4l60 or 4l80?

All 6.5td suburbans got the 4l80. Now the 1500 pickups and 2 door Tahoes with the 6.5 got the 4l60 plus the egr version of the engine. The 6.5 suburbans all got the non-egr version.

I feel strongly, with the amount of loaded travel and towing you will be doing, that you should go for a full 3/4 ton.

Rich tell everyone what you just bought!!!!! It is super awesome, and will be more than adequate at towing across the country.

What's that?
