Crew cab. Use it or lose it.

where did you get those lines from Kert?

I work with my local auto parts store for stuff like this. Good guys to work with, pretty knowledgable and quit asking what I'm trying to do along time ago.:D

If only we could get that around here. I get so tired of looking to get an air filter and them wanting to know how many doors or something ike that. Although that is how I met a fellow CK5'er. He was working after hours @ a parts house and I was needing a part for a '91 crewcab. He kept asking alot of questions and I was getting tired of it. I said something very specific and he knew about it so I realized he wasn't the usual dumba$$.:D

That's why I ask for the part number.

Fixed it. Don't want to hurt my image.

Just a note for anyone reading this...you'll need an 18mm wrench to get two of the fittings out on a hydroboost truck.
I got one. Weird that you have to buy that specific wrench as they don't include them in ANY set i've ever seen

Funny you say that. I was wondering why they always skipped a few metric wrenches myself when I was walking through the tool aisle at home depot last week. What did I see? A set of husky wrenches that included the 18mm!!! I didn't buy it, I'm hoping I never need to buy anymore normal wrenches.

So, the crew cab is back in the shop for a modification. Wasn't really happy with the RPM range on the highway at cruising speed. Great in town and on the bottom end but revving a bit high for peak performance.

Got an NV4500 going in for the overdrive and reliability of a manual trans. The 4500 I got had a damper on it, which has been removed, stripped down to the center sleeve and will be pressed back on. Got some plans for alleviating some of the 5th gear nut issues.

is the nv4500 2wd ?

if so thay dont have the problem as the bolt on yoke takes care of this so i have been told .

Sounds pretty similar to my NV4500. I just kept the damper, it's actually a good insulator for the 5th gear nut.

It's a 4wd unit. The nut was off the shaft when I got it.

I would have liked to keep the damper, just not gona work out with what we're doing. From what I can gather the damper was a bandaid fix for the harmonics of the diesel engines. At any rate, the ultimate solution is a new shaft, I just don't have time to get into that right now. Hopefully, things will start going back together next week.

Time will tell how our fix holds up.

NV4500 is in. It put up a fight but in the end we were victorious.

...and? Driven it yet? Pics?

Rene

Not much else to report. It's in. No clutch pedal yet. No tcase yet. All the exhaust will have to be modified including the passenger side header. Got some clearance issues at the slave cylinder. Hopefully this week I can make some more progress. Got alot riding on the outcome of this weeks evenings.

You mean the boss doesn't have you doing honey-do's after work :haha::haha::haha::haha: How the hell do you rate :D

Nah, she wants both these trucks back together. I just whined about it like a little bitch till she got tired of hearing it.:haha:

Hey Kert,
I love the truck. it is super sweet in a sickkk kind a way!!
I am going to be working on a similar project. I have an '87 R30 crew with a 454. Plans include 4x4 conversion with nv4500/np205/dana60, all of which I have on hand. my question to you is why not use the damper? does it not work with the np205? I had planned on finding one for the extra insurance against vibration/harmonics but if it doesn't fit then I can take that out of the conversion budget. Mine is eventually getting a ve pumped cummins that is on my engine test stand too, but I don's want to change too many things all at once. Makes it easier to track down issues that way.

Ultimately I believe the best fix is a new shaft. Outside of that, you're stuck with one of the myriad of different nuts. Set screw on most of them some other odd stuff out there too. The nut drops down deep in the damper so if you wanted to use a set screw type nut, you can't get an allen wrench in to tighten them up. Basically the damper gets in the way to do much work with the nuts outside of just torquing them down.

We're going to do a jam nut type set up. Which could be done with the damper but have another thing we want to try that the damper would interfere with.

The nut will still back off the shaft with or without the damper so that being said, it's not a perfect fix either. It's really kind of a ridiculous problem though. As far as the tcase is concerned, the damper shouldn't have anything to do with it. It's in the tail housing much further forward than the output splines.

although the nv4500 5th gear nut backing off is usually only uncovered with low rpm torque when behind a cummins.
