Crew cab. Use it or lose it.

Crew cab recieved some much needed attention this weekend.

We produce a fair amount of scrap materials at the shop and can only store it so long before it becomes a hinderance. The crew cab is currently the only rig we have that is up to the task of pulling the heavy loads of scrap. This weekend push came to shove and we had to get some things that had been neglected on the crew cab back in order.

Mostly normal maintenance kind of things. Pretty boring stuff overall.

Windshield wiper motor was replaced.

Heater blower motor fan switch was replaced. No defrost just doesn't work. We also fixed a speaker wire and a vent duct at the same time since we were already into the dash.

Front seat belts had some issues so those were replaced. They had become incredibly touchy, touchy to the point of having to be completely motionless to pull the belt out.

A header leak was fixed. One bolt would only tighten so far before hitting the tube.

AC compressor had locked up some time ago so we took the opportunity to swap that out. We'll have a local shop charge the system on tuesday so there is no chance of engaging the AC without any oil in the system.

The biggest job was rear spring replacement. Our old 56's were shot and sagging every which way. The air bags, while helpful were not all they were cracked up to be on this particular rig. In conjunction with the springs we had, even before they were shot, created another mission critical system and extra complications. All of that was removed in favor of a new set of HD springs. The new springs were installed and caused the rear of the truck to sit about 3" to high. Front and rear hangers for the springs were rebuilt to lower the truck. Now it sits with just the right amount of rake to it. It will be interesting to see how they handle the load. They are pretty heavy duty.

Last but certainly not least, the brake master cylinder was replaced. Ours had an internal leak that caused the pedal to slowly fall as you held the vehicle stationary. We are still bleeding the system and hopefully that will be done today.

Looking forward to putting the big girl to use again. It's been sitting for a while due to all the issues. I think a truck not being used is one of the worst things for it.

what spring # you use ?

i have a set of 22-617-hd @ 4650lbs each pack . i was going to use them in my truck but have decided to possible use less spring n more air bagg for the better ride and extra when i need it.

Yep, 22-617HD. Had I wanted to keep the bags I would have went to the non HD. I think its just simpler this way and considering a flatbed with a modular type design as well. The extra capacity will get used.

Nice progress Kert, I have been derailed so much I haven't even got to the shop but once this past week. Next week, I'll get there...yeah that's it!

You shoulda sent me a pic of the new and old springs together.

Would of like to have seen that.

Cool stuff man.

It was a mad rush. Got it all done though. Finished bleeding the breaks on Monday. Had to get out the pressure bleeder to get them done but it's so nice to have a good pedal again.

Thought you might be interested in the items in the third pic!!

Got to drive it just a little bit today to make sure everything was ready to go. Rear suspension feels so much better. Just a touch on the rough side but its unloaded right now. A full tank of fuel and a load will settle it down nicely as well as some break in time.

Brake pedal is so firm. I think my master cylinder was going bad over a period of time. Slowly getting worse, one day you think, my brakes kinda suck. Got to have it to a shop tomorrow to get the AC flushed and charged so it doesn't accidentally get engaged and the compressor burnt up. After that, its time to haul some scrap!

If the AC system is empty, the compressor clutch can't engage because of the low pressure switch.

Tell that to my last compressor. Seized up right quick. I guess a low pressure switch can be faulty as well??? Just not takin' the chance this time. I really don't know much about AC.

It is however charged and ready for usage. Blows nice cold air, may be a bad time of year to judge the coldness with my hand though. Guys who did the work for me thought I should bring it back in when the ambient temps come up so they can check it out. Brings me to my next question.

I need to wire up one of my fans to work when the AC compressor comes on. I had it wired this way but had a power back feed that was engaging the compressor clutch. Power was coming through the relay back to the compressor. Anybody have a source for a diode to prevent that back feed?

AC is working. I did manage to get one fan wired to a toggle switch so when the AC is on, I can manually kick on one fan.

Brake problem, the mysterious self applying brakes. Has plagued us for the last few weeks and I haven't had time to mess with it. Tonight I put a couple of our body shims between the master and they hydro boost. 2 per bolt and tightened it back down on those. So, 15 minute drive home and it didn't have the brake issue. Friday I'm gona trade in my trailer. It's a half hour drive so that will be a better test for it. If it continues to work properly, I guess I need to adjust the brake pedal rod.

Slowly been getting the HP60 ready to go in. Waiting on some new spindle nuts now and once they show up, i can make the swap. Then I will finally be able to put my front shaft back in.

Then its time to swap out the dash for the aluminum dash. Been looking forward to that for a long time.

I'll post up some pics of the trailer on Friday when I get it back to the shop.

What are you doing trailer-wise ? (I'm guessing you're talking about your gooseneck, what are you getting)

Hopefully the brakes dont continue to be a problem. I have also been looking forward to the dash install!

Thanks. Been gathering up a bunch of weather pack stuff for the install. Currently debating rewiring the whole truck or just wiring into the existing harness. My electrical has gremlins and I think the best solution may be to redo the entire thing. Not sure I want to go that far though.

Here's a link to the trailer thread.

So we got the trailer traded in and didn't have the brake issue. Currently I have .25" of spacer between the master cylinder and hydro boost unit. Gona make that .125" and try it for a bit.

Got the Dana 60 that's going into it finished up today and as soon as I finished painting it, I realized I hadn't put on shock mounts. I gotta get a tie rod built for it yet and then I think its ready to go in the truck. Front drive shaft here we come. Get some pics of it once the tie rod is on. The Hydro assist mounting is in place so that will be done right away this time.

Then I think its on to some electrical issues. The marker light/tail light/instrument lighting fuse burning up all the time has got to go.
