Alright guys, I've finally got to this swapping axle shafts. Went got the spindle Nut socket from Napa yesterday. Paid $35 for it. Don't want to ef it up.IMG_20190509_103244018.jpg
Looking at the tabs can see that's what I'm about to do.
The method I came up with was to take a couple ratchet straps and wrap the socket real tight to the rotor. Put a breaker with a 4' cheater on it and basically stood on it. Bounced a little even. All I got was the tabs on the socket giving as you can see in the pic. What's the trick?
 
Use a socket of better construction. I had the same results with an advance auto parts socket that looked identical. Went to oreillys and bought one that has the tabs inset to the socket. Works like a champ.
 
That socket should be fine. That's all I have ever used. It shouldn't be that tight.
 
Well I obviously broke it lose with the first socket cause it came right off no problem. But the second socket grabs the nut 100% better. It'll make the passenger side much easier.
 
I have a 4 prong socket with the tabs inside the "ring" for the 1/2 and 3/4 ton front axles--lent it to a friend once so he could take his hubs off a Dodge,and he used an impact gun on it--the ring came off,it was just tack welded to the rest of the socket..was able to weld it back together OK though..but I bought another K-D socket like the first one pictured for $2 at the flea market for a back up "just in case"..

I hate "special tools" like this..no reason an ordinary nut with a hex could not have been used instead of this sucky design..
 
It does help to support the socket with a jackstand.
 
only thing with the ring sockets style #2 in pic is watch the depth of the ring as i have seen some not set correct and they bottom out on the inner nuts little tiny index pin for the washer of holes to lock it in place and snap it off .

i have snap-on sockets of the open tab design and i have even used impacts on them no bent tabs . the first socket was cheep SH!T

This brings another observation. I haven't cleaned up the inner nut yet but there was no pin. Thinking maybe it just got pushed into the nut hopefully. Somehow. I guess it's pretty important but seems to me the Tang on the inside of the washer serves the same purpose.

Ouch thats rough.

Yes you need the pin on the inner nut to tie it to the lock ring with the tang. Without the pin the inner nut is free to move.
 
I need to get new wheel bearings for my crusty spindle. I'm gonna try to save the spindles. In ordering bearings though I see there are two different sets. One for up to '79 and one for '80 and up. My D60s BOM has been erased. Is there another way to tell what year it is?
 
I thought the chevy 60's were all the same...
 
Evapo Rust is the bomb for rust. That stuff is amazing, i have used a bunch of it.
