Dabomb's 1985 Jimmy - Rust Repair/Floor Replacement/Upgrades: TPI Swap

what yr is the rig? it matters... it's bolted to the wheelwell... and USUALLY bolted to those 2 floor sections in front and behind the well.. but the newer ones can be welded...

it also has 4 bolts per side that bolt the tailpan to the qrter from underneath in the corner... it is fillet welded at the bottom of the C-pillar.. and than spotwelded down the door jam..

It is a 85'. Those 4 bolts to the tailpan are non existent. They were barely hanging on when I redid the tail pan. And with the 2"x3" square tube that I used for my tail pan, I didn't/couldn't use what was left of them.

Theoretically, if nothing in front of the wheel well where the previous repair was made was welded to the quarter panel, I should be able to cut the C-pillar off/remove spot welds on the door jam/cut area where the angle iron is below fuel neck/unbolt wheel well and it comes right off....but that's in theory.

I'd assume Classic Industries sells body parts for these? I really don't know. Either way, the free shipping deal would be killer.

They sure do, unfortunately the passenger side is out of stock and on back order. I wonder if the free shipping applies to items being shipped freight?

I will look into that next time one of the Free Shipping codes comes around. I had noted that thread previously. Might go ahead and subscribe to it.

I got some work done tonight after I got off work.

Passenger side rocker welded into place. Made sure I didn't weld the area that will be removed with the quarter panel.

Once that was in I got the piece of angle iron welded in place for the wire channel. Then cut and welded my patch panels in. Ended up doing it in 2 pieces. There was a difference in height from the floor to the angle iron that wasn't there on the drivers side. I got it all to fit and come together nicely though. All that's left tomorrow night is to get my little pieces of metal to close up the ends of that channel and then it's time to get another coat of RG on everything. Then seam sealer! Which came in Friday.

Got an hour in tonight before I headed out. Passenger side is finished up. Got it coated in RG. Hopefully tomorrow night I can get the seam sealer process started. I laid another coat of paint down on the drivers side as well. Took some overall shots.

looks good and solid!

I'm dreading that work, I gotta do the same thing you did to my C10's passenger side too, plus the A pillar area. I'd rather buy a new cab lol

I highly considered buying a new cab. Even found one on here that would of been free minus getting it shipped across the country. But I couldn't afford it. Decided what the heck I'm just going to dive into the dang thing. Really was a huge step. Obviously having very little experience meant that it took a lot longer as I learned as I went.

But in the end if someone was to ask if they should go ahead and do it, I would say go for it! Once you've made the plunge you just got to keep chugging away at it.

Moving on from finishing the seam sealer/bedliner on the floor I still have plenty to do. If you look at the picture looking forward up on the roof where the top mounts you can see a pretty nasty spot that I'm going to need to deal with. Completely at a loss of how to even go about that.....

For good reason! Common Brian, you can't go off doing that! If you end up holding onto the Blazer, whatever you do don't let the rust get too bad before you fix it. I should've done all this work the day I bought it back 5-6 years ago. Would've been a lot less work. But it was my first vehicle and only set of wheels so I couldn't park it for any extended period of time like I can now.

Also, Adam I've been meaning to ask you about that bedliner. Didn't know you watched this thread so I was going to just pm you but this works.

I know I've asked a few questions previously in pm. Now I have decided to use that brand as well. What I'm curious about is what kind've prep work you specifically did when you sprayed it.

I plan on doing what Paul suggested and going through with the seam sealer then scuffing up the RG before I lay the bedliner down. If there is another step you did or would suggest since you've used the same product I figured I would ask.

it's all the same prep.. sand.. blow off.. degrease... coat...

like I said, as gritty as you can go without going thru is best for good adhesion... denatured alcohol for degreasing, damp/dry with paper towels..

Would it be a horrible thing if I waited a few weeks to do it? I would love to get it all done in the next two weeks. But I'm going to be out of town from Thursday to Sunday this week. Maybe I should just go ahead and pony up to order the bedliner. That way I have it available as soon as I get it prep'd.

Stupid question I think but....would it be a bad idea to rinse out the interior with the hose and then dry it all up/park it outside on a sunny warmish day? This is after the seam sealers in and has had time to dry and everything has at least a coat of GP on it.

between prep and coating? that's fine but it's always good to do a quick degrease right before doing it to pull any dust off..

rinsing it out is fine, better if you soap wash it first, than rinse... blow out, and thoroughly air dry... you do that, than you really don't need to degrease it, the soap did that... remember, don't put the RG over the seam sealer if you can avoid it...

Yep I put the last coat of RG on it last night. Its ready for sealer. Then I will just do that soap/wash/rinse when I'm ready to paint and continue from there. I mainly wanted to rinse it out to get rid of the crazy amount of dust that has built up. Even with the blow gun last night I still could feel dust/particles on the floor. Hopefully once that time comes I will be able to get a nice sunny day to do it. My goal is to be able to get it bed lined before I head out of the country for spring break (March 6th-March 15th).

Then I can swap places in the garage with my Trans Am and get my TKO 600 that will be delivered tomorrow installed in it burnoutbefore I start on the quarter panel work/maybe TPI swap on the Jimmy.

What Paul said :thumb:

One thing I would advise, is do any and all floor mods now. I wish I woulda done my cage and body mounts before I did the bedliner. Because now I gotta cut and remove some anyways.... But luckily I still have half the kit left. Hoping its still in good shape. Cans haven't been opened.

And yah Ive been watching. Great work. Reminds me how much I hated doing the same stuff lol.

I really don't have any plans for a cage or any other future floor mods. So I think I'm good in that department.

I do think however that I will just get the smaller kit instead of the kit you got. All I plan to coat is just the floor. I will also shoot the bottom side of the rockers as well. Want all the protection I can get under there.

The bedsides have some kind've coating on them already. Plus the passengers side will be removed anyways so I'm not even going to seam seal that bedside/floor joint yet...doesn't make since if I will be removing that quarter in a month or so.

And you're right. Its a love/hate job to do. I love how its coming along and looking good. But man it has been some crappy work.:doah:
