Dana 44 - How to beef up ???

I was picking on you....

Besides you should thank me....

Look at the extra posting you got to do /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I agree with Greg72. Rebuild it but keep it stock and open. If you find out after you've been wheeling a while that you need more beef or a locker worry about it later.

[/ QUOTE ] I just can't find one around here. I've been looking for over a year !!! Closest I came was one on the other side of the state and then they wanted $1,800.00 for it, and it needed rebuilt. /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

I would still do at least a limited slip, there is no doubt that leaving it open will be an immediate problem, and costs more money to fix it later than to just do it right the first time. At least with a trac-lok you can get a limited slip and have the option of putting in one of those cheapie lockers later on.

[/ QUOTE ] Why thank you for being a a$$hole. You talk about all my posts, but fail too relize that 90% of them have been in OT. If I have a tech question, can't I ask it ??? Unlike some people, I don't know everything. Damn, I'm all for giving people Sh*t, but try too keep it real in the tech forums. I asked about beefing up a Dana 44 becouse the local 4X4 shop claims that a Dana 44 can be built too handle 38's for 1/2 the price of a Dana 60. Personally, I find that just alittle hard to beliive.

38s, a D44, & a heavy truck ain't going to work. Hell yes there is a cheep way to make it work; just remove the body. Then you won't have a place to put all the stuff you would carry or passangers. That will save even more weight.

If you find it hard to beleive, why are you going to do it? I beefed a D44 once to live under 38s, and it didn't work. Once everyhing else was beefed the ring gear ended up being the weak point. Think about it -

New gears - $150
Limited Slip - $400
Alloy shafts - $400
CTM joints - $350
Rebuild kit - $150

Thats $1450 and it's a real conservative estimate, doesn't include any small parts like wheel bearings, and no labor costs either. You always talk about how you like to go overkill so you can get out of the woods and whatnot, so do it right. DOn't waste your money trying to make a D44 live under 38s, just do it right in the first place. I know a guy in your neck of the woods that has gotten like 3 D60s in the past year, all for under $800, so I know they're out there.

Since when is wheeling in 4' diameter boulders "light wheeling"? For some people around here that might be light, but for most people it's pretty hardcore.

maybe you should make some compromises, you could beef it up somewhat, with some or all those options, ctms, cromoaxles,
limited slips, etc, but maybe you could just decide to live with 35s, maybe the new spicer ujoints, im doing the same,
and just decided to live with broken parts if they break,
they break, just replace them, its not life or death,

[/ QUOTE ] To be totally honest, I don't give a f*ck if you think anyone is cryin'. People like you that point fingers and say someone is ******** or ######## annoy me. It has nothing to do with what the thread is about. Please try too stay on topic here in the tech forums. Leave the other crap for OT. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

dude, you waste sooooo much bandwidth around here. I mean, there is a search button. Steve keeps old info.

99.999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of your 8,000+ posts have been covered extensively. In fact, if you *ever* post about 33" tires on a stock Blazer i don't know what I'd do....

[ QUOTE ]
I'd really like too have a Dana 60, but I don't think I can afford one at this time.

[/ QUOTE ]

Get a parts list of every single part that goes into a 60.... and buy all the parts you need. Buy em as you save up for them, bit by bit. I was gonna do that until I found out I could actually still sell a Ken Griffey Jr rookie card for a good price, and I have to give Cal Ripken Jr some thanks too for the purchase... /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
