dana60 death wobble with hydro assist now...yikes. Updated 11/27

I have radials and TSL Bias. When i run the bias, i get a little also. When I run the radials, No DW. 38" Toyo's, 42" TSLs

Check all your steering components. Have someone sit in the truck and rock the steering wheel back and forth while you look closely at all your TREs. Also watch your whole axle to see if its shifting side to side. Make sure the wheel bearings are nice and tight and check toe-in as well. goodluck

Back from the dead...

I saw you post in another DW thread so I had to ask, are you still running the 7.25" shackles up front? If so, have you checked your caster?

I had B52's + 7.25's and the DW was scarry. I checked and my caster was @ 11°, changing to a 6" shackle brought it to spec @ 8°. My DW is 95% gone now. (no hydro assist, yet)

where do you measure the caster from? which plane is equal to 0* and which is caster plane you know?
ive got 7.25 shackle but also shimmed it up 6*. im curious of my actual situation.
i dont have any death wobble and i have hydro assist.

Level ground and then stick an angle finder on the flat top of the king pin cap.

How much play do you have in your steering box? You can check by having someone else turn the wheel side to side while you watch the steering box.

i do still have the 7.25's, i forgot about that, that may be my problem!

While you are in that area check the upper shackle bushings. If they are stock they are probably shot and contributing too. Mine were and I replaced them with Kerts kit.

My V3500 is starting to do it now and I can hear noise from that bushing when I hit a good bump.

ive got kerts kit as well with b52's, but i will definitely check the bushings as well, they only got about 2k miles on them.

update!! well finally got back from school, and had a chance to try and fix this dw issue.

i had my buddy get in the truck and steer lock to lock with the engine running while i looked at all the steering components. i noticed that there is some side to side movement with the 7.25" shackles (would cross-ties help that?), all the tre's looked good, no excess movement or anything. i did notice that the steering box moved on the frame.

i checked the 4 steering box bolts and 2 of them were pretty loose. i tightened all of them up and had my buddy do the same thing, steer lock to lock with engine running, and the box still moves a little bit. i dont have a bolt-on brace or weld on brace on it (shoulda done both a long time ago, i know). so im thinking that the frame might be cracked, and that that is definitely contributing to it (am i correct in thinking this?)

i'm thinking this kind of activity might have contributed to the frame crack (over the summer about 3-400 miles before the DW started)

im thinking that switching to 6" cross-tied shackles and weld-in brace and bolt-on box brace should fix it, would that make sense as a solution? im also going to add another fender washer under each arm.

thoughts given the new information? thanks for the help guys!

I'm thinking you are exactly right. I think doing the stuff you mentioned will fix the problems that are causing your wobble. Especially the shackles. But the shackles won't do you too much good without the steering braces.

And if that don't fix it, have you thought about installing a travel bar setup like the twizted engineering? Cause that would go a long way also!

i used 6 fender washers per side on mine to get rid of the bad wobble i had. think it was worn springs. now i have arms with adjustable preload so no issues now. stick a ton of washers in and see what happens lol

I'd bet your frame is cracked around the box, you might even try and get your tires rebalanced, out of balance tires are also responsible for death wobble at times.

Make sure that the cross ties in the shackles wont hit your frame.

6" w/o cross ties on mine (swtched from 7.25"), no more dw. :woot:
