Dash Gauge Buildup

okay so i bought a fusable link (14 g) is all they had and i asked a mechanic family member and he said that is fine just for the link..the rest of it is 16g wire. i will run it through the fuse box to save me the pain, and its better that way..

i bought the following
10 15 and 20 amp fuses (bc with my luck they didn't have 5) i should run a 5 right?
if there is an empty space on my fuse box i.e. something for the efi computer since i'm carbed now, can i just splice off that or will that cause some type of problem?
whats the best route to run the wire from the trans to the gauge?

off topic: i bought a couple switches (a 2 way and a 3 way) and on the switch it says 1 2 3 so my guess is 1 is power, 2 would be the ground, and 3 would be something else..am i close? am i close?

All these switches do is break the elect. circuit.

Imagine a piece of wire a foot long hooked up to the + on the battery.
the other end goes to a 12 volt light (one of the 2 wires). touch the other wire on the light to the - on the battery. Poof the light comes on.

If your switch IS a lighted one:
Now cut that 1 foot piece of wire in half. Attach one end to the #1 post of the switch. Attach a ground wire (12v-) to#2 for the light inside the switch. The other half of the 1 foot wire goes on #3 and out to the light.

When you turn on the switch Poof the light comes on. Turn off the switch and the light goes off.

If your switch ISN'T lighted:

#1 is the 12v+ in. #2 is a 12v+ out. to say a dome light. #3 is another 12v+ out to another light. BUT #2 will go off.

Now cut that same wire from the 12v+ on the battery to the switch. Put a fuse between the switch and the battery and you have created a complete fused circuit. The fuse must be rated for the amount of amp draw on the battery. The fuse is to protect the curcuit components after it.

Sorry if I made this sound grade-schoolish. Just trying to make it simple.

Hope this helpes.

that does, and it helps even more when people explain it that way! hahah thanks a lot man i appreciate it

okay, last one i promise!.
my truck is an 87 so it shoulda had efi of some sort right? something with comp, but the PO put a carbed motor in. for the gauge it says to run a 5 amp fuse. if there is a 10 amp fuse for an ECM that is no longer in use could i use that and run a fusible link and 16g wire. or should i tap into another one of higher amperage. i dont have a lot of good backgrounds wire wiring, i jsut want to make it right, then the fusible link will have a 5 amp fuse in it. i think i need to read up on wiring. =[

okay a few more questions i need to know, i did a lot of research and asked a lot of people in other places and came up with some more knowledge, i really need it!

anyways, while hooking up the power to my new gauge i had just accidentally tore the power to my bowtie overdrive kit..the site says 30amp keyed power source..so i plugged it back in, but how do i check to see if i am getting power or not?

since i no longer have a comp nor ecm there are no fuses in the box for obvious reasons..i decided to use that as a power source..as i was downthere i saw ECMB which still has a fuse in it..should i remove it, leave, keep it?

and last, (i promise!), another wire wasn't ****ing connected..im pretty sure its my electric choke. i have a holley carb in it and i traced the wire to the carb on the pass. side. its a pretty thick wire..where does this go? im sorry if this sounds dumb but i gotta figure it out somehow

I just did mine last week.

Anyone have a problem with a bouncy aftermarket fuel gauge? (sorry if I missed it somewhere).

Here is a quick pic for the record. (speedo is GPS driven)

Nice I love the cobalt gauges

That is exactly how I am running my gauges, only I have fewer :doah:

What size gauges are the speedo and tach? I want to do the full cluster someday and finish what I started.

True. They are Nordskog. The speedo and tach are 3 3/8" gauges and fit perfectly in the center.

I just took out the factory gauges, cut the clear plastic and used that to mount the gauges in.
