Took my DD in for service.
35k miles and a horn went bad... it Also had a hesitation stumble..
so the stealership called me.. and said that they see I have a K&n air filter replacement filter...
so they said they want to do the throttle body cleaning ($139.99)
plus they want to do a fuel system cleaning ($139.99)

WTF is wrong with these people... why do they think we need all this stuff done.. how many people do they screw over on this?

all I know is the filter has been in there just 2 weeks.. dont really think that is it... When I took it there it seemed to be running better.. barely noticeable to begin with as no check engine light. I figured since going in for horn get them to look at it...

oh it is my 2013 GMC Sierra 5.3L Z-92

You do realize that selling service work is how they stay in business, right? Naive to think you could go in and they not try to sell you something.

Did it start to stumble after the K&N install?

Not sure about the newer motors but sometimes the K&N oil can mess up the maf reading. I had this problem on my Tahoe however a quick shot of maf cleaner is all it needed.

yeah i hear yall. .just wanted clarification..

i remember 2 oil changes ago while I was waiting.. guy came out and obviously knew this guy.. said..hey your (whatever service was) is almost done. we noticed you have 120k miles.. you should have your brake fluid flushed for fresh fluid. Will get rid of some of the spongy pedal... guy said.. how much.. he said.. $149.99 but since car is here already I will knock $30 off for $119.99... guy didnt hesitate and said.. ok...

UGHHHHHHHHHHHH

The woman next door to me was pressured into filling her tires with NITROGEN ,to "improve handling and prevent excessive tire wear",when she brought her truck in for an oil change!..for 75 bucks!..:eek1:

She called me and asked if she should do have them do it..NOOOO!...told her not only was it a waste of money,it wont do either of those things, and most likely they wouldn't even PUT any in,and SAY they did..even if your standing there watching, how would you know if their "nitrogen" tank had any in it,and not just compressed air?...

they also told her her front brakes were "nearly down to the rivets, and very dangerous"...I told her to bring the truck to my house,I took off the front wheel and the pads still had a good 1/4" of linings left on them, new ones wouldn't have been any thicker probably!...
I bet many customers ,especially women who know nothing about cars (and some guys too be fair),say "go ahead and replace the pads--and when they see they still look "new",they dont, and charge them for doing work that never was done..I stay far away from new car dealerships as far as having any service done...maybe if I had a newer vehicle under warranty, other than that, forget it..I hear too many bad things about them to trust them..of course a lot of other garages are just as bad or worse..it pays to know how to do your own repairs..

^This. It's easy to over-oil the filter and the MAF doesn't like it.

Back when I was working for Ford, a guy brought in his Expedition and insisted that the throttle body was "carboned up" and needed cleaning because the throttle was sticking. Told him it was more likely the throttle cable, and when adjusted and lubricated it worked fine, but since he really wanted that cleaning, we charged him an hour of labor to take the intake tube off and wipe down the body and butterfly with solvent. Fuel cleanings and throttle body cleanings on modern cars are just expensive snake oil to separate people from their money, and simply not necessary as long as you are using decent gas.

Pneumatic tires are generally filled with at least 78% Nitrogen...:D

Please tell me that someone else also finds that funny...:haha:

$8 can of sea foam in the tank every 4 months does the trick...

The throttle body cleaning is pretty common on 5.3s and I wouldn't be surprised one bit if it took care of your hesitation issue.

so got truck back.. all fixed... horn now sounds more manly.. :haha:

so now my warranty will be up after tomorrow.. the 36k bumper to bumper..
for me to go an additional 3yr 75k (would use up 75k first in 2 years)...
is $2900.. think this is worth it?

would be 10% down then auto withdrawl like $240 a month for 12 months or
10% down then auto withrawl about $155 a month for 18 months...

driving this much and going to have this truck for a bit.. think it is worth the extended bumper to pumper? since that covers everything.....

or say wing it and fix what breaks on its own?

:dunno:

Typically not. Remember the company would not be in business if they did not make money. For them to make money they have to charge more than the average cost to maintain a vehicle.

You already have 100K powertrain correct? That covers the most expensive pieces. The rest is not worth a $3000 gamble.

last I heard gm warrentys were private not gm owned anymore . and real pita to deal with .

if me start a savings acct at bank and save your cash for your own warrenty coverage plan .

My Volt has a factory warranty with varying levels. Bumper to bumper is 36K, drivetrain is 100K or something like that. Extended warranties are the private company. But, the 100K drivetrain warranty is from the factory.

Take the payment amount and put it into a separate savings account and see where you're at in 3 years. I'm gonna bet you'll be ahead of the game...

guy I know with gm factory ext found out the hard way of the info I posted. maybe it was different from the gm buyout/bankrupt stuff and now its new gm and different . :dunno:

:waytogo: +1

i work at a dealer i always tell customers not to do it because of if the company didn't make money at it they wouldn't be is bizz

Couple of comments......
On my '89 Ford, 5.8L MPI, if I don't clean the throttle body where the butterfly closes every few months, it will stick badly and I have to keep blipping the throttle to get it to idle down.

But I can do it by pulling off the air cleaner hoses, holding the throttle wide open and use a rag with some carb cleaner on a long screwdriver to wipe out the crud.

I think its related to the fact that the truck does a bank fire setup instead of an individual injector system.
When you turn the truck off, there is some fuel vapor left in the runners, and it rises up to the butterflies and leaves deposits.

I also try to flush and replace my brake fluid at least every two years. Since it will absorb moisture, replacing it will help prevent wheel cylinder corrosion and lowered boiling points.
Of course, I live in Fl, which pretty much defines the word "humid".

Put 2500 aside for unexpected repairs that are not covered under the federal emissions or powertrain warantee when the bumper to bumper warantee is up. I bet you'll have 2500 still sitting there when the warantee is up. Bumper to bumper covers things like rattles and shakes, failing power windows, radios and other interior parts / accessories. You can do a LOT of repairs for 2500.

yeah i will fix as needed and not do the warranty...

I know that my 08 when i traded it in... from drivers seat you could operate all windows fine..
but from back (crew cab)... behind driver couldnt put window up and passenger couldnt put window down... relays???? dunno traded in that way..
few other little things some that wouldnt be covered by warranty and I figured would cost $1500 to get truck up to par so still cheaper...

thanks guys...

I wonder if they did do something cus it is running just fine.. i better make sure they put my K&N back in..
it was the replacement one not the full upgrade...
