DD into Stealership for Horn and they want more

I only see Air Seps on big Detroits, etc... all gas motors have to have a flame arrestor..

I've NEVER seen a K@N in a boat... but I don't work on many mastercrafts and such anymore.....

Not sure when they got away from the flame arrestor, but the last 2 have had metal closed end style K&N's on them.

The new one sorta make sense, as is fly by wire. But, the last one was MPFI, and no "flame arrestor" to speak of.

A 98 Malibu I used to work on had a metal flame arrestor with metal mesh surrounding it, but no real air filter to speak of.

Current Indmar 350.

yeah, I've seen maybe, a 1/2 dozen Indmar's in my life..couple ski boats at my last marina, that's it.. not something you see in anything over 21 to 24' or so.. I play with mostly 27' to 55' stuff... pleasurecraft and sportfish stuff..

that's all stock merc stuff...

I never did get the whole k&n thing, does it sound cool idk, always heard they cause more trouble than they are worth but never tried one or care too.

Like chrome valve covers I quess.

We also drive gas guzzling pigs and spend plenty of money on our rigs so I'm no concerned with how much a paper filter cost. I can't be bothered with the whole changing the oil in the air filter thing, but that's just me.

There are a couple of comparisons where independent labs test air flow and quality between a number of filters, including the stock paper filter and the K&N. Stock filter flowed as well if not better than all. I won't waste my money on any aftermarket filters, based on this, but that's just me.

Personally, I like oil bath air cleaners........:dunno:

whatever.. it wasnt about the kn air filter.. more of the stealership trying to get more cash...

so kn filter is bad so i will keep using it...
guess you guys would tell me the fram oil filter i use is bad too.. whatever

Well, hobbyists are their worst nightmare. People who think they know how to do their jobs but are too lazy to do it and want them to instead, drives them nuts.

With my DD, I just take it to the dealer and bend over 'cuz I can't find anything under the hood, and that's okay.

K&N filters do let more dust in,but its debateable if its actually harmfull--a lot of dust gets burned up in the combustion process and exhausted before it has a chance to do any real damage...I suppose it could be a problem on a new vehicle with a MAF sensor though..its better than no air filter!..

If you saw the cut open Fram vs a Wix or many other quality oil filters, you'd not want to use them...I always thought an oil filter was an oil filter, till a Wix sales rep took one of several brands off the store shelf and took a pipe cutter to them, and showed us just whats inside them....I was pretty amazed..

For 2-3 more bucks,I'd buy a Wix or Purolator instead ..the Fram looked skimpy as far as the amount of filtering paper and it had string tied around it,and a spring steel leaf type spring to hold the element in place..the Wix has metal bands around the element, and a coil spring, also many Wix filters have an anti-drain back valve that Fram ones fitting the same applications dont...

I have had my 78 since 1988... doesnt get much use now but fram it has and will... i think it would miss the fram..... aint hurt it yet and wont.
My dd gets dealer oil and filter due to this thing... lifetime oil change.. they dont put wix onit or do they? I dunno cuz i dont look... still running....

The Fram filters DO meet "OEM" standards, which are pretty lame evidently, they are OK I suppose as long as you change them every 3000 miles religiously, many other "bargain" brands with various names are no better, that are often used at quickie lube places ,so Fram isn't alone...

My truck has an AC oil filter on it,its been on it a long time, probably 5+ years,I only drove it 2500 miles though.but I'm sure its filthy, being a diesel engine..AC has ,or should I say HAD a compareable quality to Wix and other good filters, but I've heard now that they went to mexico to make them they lowered the standards some...(I should change the filter, now that I think of it!:doah:)..

I prefer Wix or Purolator, but thats just me,everyone has a favorite brand of oil & filters...I have a Fram that fits my truck in my room I got for Christmas about 8 years ago--still haven't used it,I might put it on my van's gas V8,but my diesel needs a Wix or AC or Purolator...(It takes the same filter as a V8 gas engine,I like using the Wix 2 quart one on it though, even though they cost 15 bucks )..

Fram filters are trash. The only thing great about them is their marketing and their low price.

Thinking someone is having some fun stirring the pot a little... :haha:

I've seen the article on the fram oil filter, the cheap one, the end caps are paper and gets one of the lowest ratings. It does make difference without the drain back valve.
My 300k + ranger rattles on start up with the cheap fram but does not with a motorcraft filter.

I will not run fram on anything I own. It's all my grandfather will buy becuase it is the cheapest option available.

I run Napa Gold which is a re-branded WIX filter. I also run paper filters in the Tahoe. Turbochargers don't like dirt, and a K&N lets lots of dirt in.

5 years is a long time for a filter and oil, though it's probably okay with the low mileage. I'd be more concerned about moisture buildup from lack of use.

Years ago when I worked at a Jiffy Lube, a lady brought in a Ford Ranger with a noisy valvetrain. When they dropped the plug, no oil came out. Then, after some prodding with a screwdriver, a few clumps of oily crud dropped out. Then the tech noticed it had a factory oil filter. It was a 4 year old truck with 55,000 miles, and the lady had never changed the oil. We declined to work on it because of liability, but filled it up with oil and sent her on her way. It actually quieted down with some oil in there that wasn't solid. I would be surprised if that filter wasn't plugged up.

Me too!..:doah:..I bet it weighs 5 lbs when I take it off!..

I have kept putting off changing the filter,my bad... ,my oil pan is rotted and has J-B putty on the weeping areas and I lose a quart a week roughly,I need to pull the engine up to get the pan off and change it "someday"(might just yank it right out, seeing it also needs exhaust manifolds replaced and the bolts look like nails, and are right against the frame rails!:doah:)..
..seeing I put a fresh quart in it that often, and it probably doesn't stay in it long enough to get that dirty ,I'm hoping I haven't done it any harm...
I never did use a 2 quart oil filter on the 6.2 ,but probably should have...why GM decided to use the same "small" oil filter all the other V8's used on it is rather baffling..you'd think a diesel would have a BIG oil filter..

How about we go back to building things that last and dont NEED a gd warranty? How many odd items have any of you got from your grandad that still work great while the new ones you bought are on the 8th replacement?

I always say if they used modern tech and materials, and applied that same "built to last quality" of the 50's, sh*t would last forever...

forever = poor sales

or

if 20% plastic is good, 90% must be better, right? :haha:
