"death wobble"

Re: \"death wobble\"

Before spending any money on attempted fixes, try putting the fender washers on top of the kinpin springs, if that stops it, your kingpin springs are worn out. If that does not fix the problem, try tire rotation, balancing, air pressure, all the little things that don't cost a lot of money, one at a time, before you start spending a lot.

The washer fix stopped mine.

Re: \"death wobble\"

the phrase in question is very common in the alignment industry.
"set toe and let go"
it doesnt sound like you know what is being done to 'align' your truck
my tape measure works as well as 'Joe's Alignment and General Rippoffs'
maybe your tape measure doesnt work so well?

Re: \"death wobble\"

i got regular old tsl's, i think my allignments good, if i let go of my wheel it goes strait. i thinks its just my tires, they have been on atleast 10 different trucks and are pretty beat. by the way every one its a 10 bolt not a d60 /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

MJ,

When you take a vehicle into an alignment shop, they don't just roll it up onto there gauge of choice in a repetable place. They also do a complete inspection of your front end componets.

Imagine the liability issues. Say someone takes their vehicle into an alignment shop and on the way home they crash and someone gets killed. Do you not believe that this would become an issue with the investigation? A complete inspect should be part of and alignment. Throw the tape measure away and have it done by a professional. /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif

Re: \"death wobble\"

I am competent enough to inspect my truck
believe it or not I even have a pretty good grasp at what some of the parts do and how they work

Great; I believe that 4 eyes are better than 2. We all know how to inspect our rigs. But are you saying it is not possible for you to miss something or mess up?

The whole point of this forum is to gather information that people offer and put it to use as they see fit. This is what I meen by the "4 eyes are better than 2" theory. /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

Re: \"death wobble\"

I have had a few bad experiences with "professional" shops
you had best inspect their work

Ya me too. For the most part I do all my work as well. I find this site full of information that gives me that "other pair of eyes". /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

Re: \"death wobble\"

Caster and camber certainly is adjustable on our trucks. Caster you'd use shims on the spring pads. Camber can be adjusted a number of ways depending on what you've got for a front axle. Moog makes all this stuff, and a, "Professional" alignment would include this stuff.

Re: \"death wobble\"

you couldnt get stiffer then my superlift ones
it is the kingpins. well proven IMO by members of this forum.
what needs to be done now is to quanitfy the required spring pressures to quell the wobble with as low a pressure as possible.
actually replacing the spring with a preloadable roller bearing would be even better!

Re: \"death wobble\"

If you do a search of CK5 and Pirate on the subject of DW and find that there is every possible combination of springs, shocks, stabilizers, tires, vehicles, new, old, lifted, not lifted, etc., and you won't find any common denominatior.

When I installed my 60 I ran it for a yr and a half without a hint of DW, then one day, I had DW. We chased the problem for about 3 mo before discovering the fenderwasher trick and determining that the kingpin springs were worn out. Replacing the springs and bushings stopped mine completely.

With all that said, there will be others who will tell you that this didn't help their problem. /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif

Re: \"death wobble\"

Its more then king pins seeing as the man has a 10 bolt!

Re: \"death wobble\"

You say the tires are worn out? They may have become separated and caused a buldge in the tread. Making an uneven rotating tire......

As for the 60s (king pin style) The problem lies in (when prevenitave maint. is ruled out wheel bearings, ect.) not the wheel alignment, steering setup, tire size (to a point), springs, or what band aid is on the axle.
It lies in the KNUCKLE PRELOAD............

Re: \"death wobble\"

I put a new military d60 in my truck a couple years ago and test drove it before I put the steering stabilizer on and had death wobble. Put the stabilizer on and got rid of the wobble, haven't had it since.

Re: \"death wobble\"

I have been getting death wobble.. even on the freeway with my hydro ram... This weekend i tightened everything up, replaced a cracked bushing on the shackle, inspected the kingpins, and last adjusted the toe in to about zero toe.
This has helped and i haven't gotten deathwobble since, though i'm pretty sure it'll be there if i take off the hydro ram.

Guess what its still there...
Guess what else the man who started this whole thread has 1/2 ton axles, time for the 1 ton hardecore group to move along.
Nothing to see here just us mall crusers, go on keep it moving...... /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

Re: \"death wobble\"

hey its 3/4 ton, even know its the same as a 1/2 ton with 8 lugs instead of 6 /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif, an its definalty not a mall cruiser /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif
