"death wobble"

Re: \"death wobble\"

Most times that doesnt help either. I have found on my D60 that toe and tire pressure change at what speed and how bad it is. I am down to no steering stabilizer and almost no noticable wobble anymore.

Re: \"death wobble\"

it has 38.5 swamper tsl's, they are pretty bald, and i am running about 30 psi in them

Re: \"death wobble\"

1. You have WAYYYYYYYY too much air in those Swampers.

2. You need a steering stabilizer.

3. Get your truck aligned.

Re: \"death wobble\"

I run my 40" TSL's at 15 or so. 30 is to much IMO. Toe will be hapy between 1/4" in or 1/4" out in most cases. Its a trial and error type fix. Change toe and in a bit and take it for a ride and see what it does.

Re: \"death wobble\"

ok then whats a good pressure to run?, i have a stabilizer on they way. the allignment is pretty good.

Re: \"death wobble\"

Need to have you front end alligned by a repetable place and have tires balanced. /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

Re: \"death wobble\"

no real cure for deathwobble.
The band aid fix has been putting a hydro assist ram on the tierod to absorb the wobble... the other fix has been putting some fender washers in the kingpin cap to increase the preload on the kingping bushing spring.
I now have about 7000 miles on my 1 ton axles, and i didn't get a hint of deathwobble until about 2500 to 3000 miles.. After wheelin it hard a few weekends ago, i broke the hydro ram and my k5 was almost un-driveable trying to drive home. I got the ram back on and working now, and although much better, the only time i still get some deathwobble is at freeway speeds. /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif!
I have played with several things, tightened up ubolts, made sure wheel bearings were tight, replaced my cracked shackle bushing, inspect kingpin bushings, adjust toe in so there is almost no toe in. (toe it out to compensate for bent tierod)
... this has helped but not eliminated my deathwobble.
I ordered up a kingpin rebuild kit, and plan to install it this weekend... then remove my hydro ram and take it for a drive and see if its gone.

Like i mentioned after beating my truck pretty good in the rocks, it is pretty much undriveable on the street without the hydro ram hooked up. I was getting deathwobble from every bump in the road between 15-35mph.
I can't believe what a difference the hydro assist makes, with it on, it totally absorbs and masks the deathwobble until about 60mph. Hit a big pothole or bump and the frontend starts going crazy. /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif

Re: \"death wobble\"

Oh wait a minute, i'm sorry.... some of the guys around here HAVE found a fix for their Deathwobble on the street...

... buy a tow rig and a trailor.

BTW, you running SX's or regular TSL's?

Re: \"death wobble\"

MJ,

LOL! /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif Ok, take your truck to Kmart and have the front end aligned. /forums/images/graemlins/screwy.gif I'll take mine to a place that all they do is front end alignments and we will see. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Experence is everything. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif Aligning a vehicle is easy however, troubleshooting problems such as yours is difficult and takes experence. /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

Re: \"death wobble\"

I totally agree, when it comes to car algnments...
For our trucks however, the caster and camber isn't really adjustable. You could put shims behind the spindle for camber or shims under the leaf pack for caster...
But the only thing that is really adjustable is the toe in and most people should be able to get it close with a tape measure. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
It would be nice to put yer truck on an alignment rack and make sure everything is within spec and if something wasn't that would explain the uneven tire wear on the front. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Re: \"death wobble\"

Not trying to start an argument, but I, (we), fixed my death wobble by over tourqing the u-bolts. Almost to the point that fear of snapping them came into play.
I haven't had a problem with my 60 since.
Since the kit is only $30, I had little worry about the u-bolts, I was more worried about a useless k5.
Just an .02\

Re: \"death wobble\"

I replaced all the king pin parts and tie rod ends and still get DW. I have found that rocking the wheel to one side insted of mahing on the brakes temp stops it. so i to am now playing with toe.
