Deulings 1985 K5 Blazer, --aka Borderline Obnoxious; Silver Lake pics and Vids

Oh ill just run a 50/50 mix, im not worried about that, I just meant as far as specific antifreezes for aluminum. The sticker on the top says it must be alluminum approved antifreeze to avoid corrosion

Never run all antifreeze! Water has way better heat transfer properties. Antifreeze is just some form of glycol which is a boiling point supresant and freezing point depresant. The water does all the work. If you are worried about freezing, run a 60/40 mix, if not 50/50, if worried about overheating run a 40/60 mix.

x2 or get aftermarket special stuff thats made to run extrem cold and 100% pure.

Adam, I think that is the same radiator I got for my BBC...it kept that thing at 190 the break in period no problem...only had an 7 blade fan and no shroud on it either. It will do fine for your 408.

AWESOME!!!!:woot:
Im pretty stoked about it, im actually kinda bummed the ac system still had pressure in the lines, because now the ac core is gonna be blocking the view of that purdy alluminum radiator. Oh well I guess Ill just have to get the ac running, hopefully it just needs a recharge to get the clutch to kick on

if a/c to low on charge it will keep the clutch from locking to save the compressor from burn up.

and i swaped in a stock plastic/aluminum rad from a 88-up for a cheep temp fix for me in the winter. it droped the temp a little from the copper/brass rad i had before. and the stock plastic/aluminum was 1 row :eek1:

yah my boss told me that, so im sure 26 years makes the pressure a little low lol, so ill try a recharge sometime and see if it engages, I was amazed that it still had pressure in the lines though

Any antifreeze should work fine. You can do a 50/50 mix with water to antifreeze, or you can go all antifreeze.

Personally, I would do all antifreeze because I wouldn't wanna take a chance with any water in the system expanding when it gets uber cold out.

Disregard this post. You can not run strictly antifreeze, unless it is premixed antifreeze, in which case it already has water in it. Y9ou have to run a mix.

Martin

the older anti freezes had problems with aliminum parts after awhile. my grandmas 95 lumina ate the intake up from inside out due to this:confused: Pretty much all the stuff today is labeled somewhere that it is safe for all vehicles. It'll tell you if it isnt good for aluminum. Nice score buy the way. That Rad should keep it nice and cool

I agree, all antifreeze won't cool as efficiently. In aluminum radiators I usually mix the antifreeze with distilled water, I think it has les chance of corroding if everything is more pure. But it's probably overkill since I am sure the inside of your block isn't spotless bare metal anyway.

Also, hate to burst your bubble Adam, but those northern radiators are only about $200 new if that's the 31 x 19 unit. Still, they work great and if it got you up and running quicker and it's almost new anyway, it's all good. If that's a vehicle specific unit then it may well cost significantly more new.

Glad you got the engine working right away! That's good news, I bet you are getting excited! You're doing an excellent job putting everything together and cleaning it up and making it look good. You'll be glad you did that when you are done.

I should have clarified this better, I meant 50/50 mixed antifreeze. That's my fault, sorry all thanks for pointing it out. I've been around radiators my whole life my dad owns a radiator shop. Just had a major brain fart. :doah::doah::doah::doah:

Well i guess i may have gotten jipped if i paid 200 for it but it looks nice and has the external and internal tranny cooler and i only had to driue 5 miles to get it lol. I am pretty stoked to get it out! their wont be any updates today, ive blown off my lady all weekend to work on the truck so im buildin up the brownie points tonight lol. The trucks not goin anywhere so it can wait till tomorrow

Wel if it has an internal tranny cooler then it costs more money right there, I didn't think it had that. You did fine man, now go build up some points so you can use em up again! :haha:

As my boss tells me, its time to go skye diving lol. Yes thats how its spelled lol

Brownie points engaged, time to spend some tomorrow hopefully lol.

Hopefully that radiator doesnt need much fabbing to hook up as far as the shroud and brackets. I think its about an inch shorter than mine.

Got it broked in!!!:thumb:

It was sketchy however because my temp gauge decided not to work... and neither did my mechanical pressure gauge, but the electric pressure gauge read 60 off the bat and after it warmed up down to around 50ish.

Since we were ten min in and realized the temp gauge wasnt gonna go up we just kept a close eye on everything, headers didnt glow, no steam or smoke, coolant resevour didnt start to bubble or anything. So hopefully that big ol radiator kept it cool..

Sounded pretty good but the cameras dont do justice lol, very crackly.

Well heres what youve all been askin for:thumb:

Videos may not be in order, oh well you will get the point lol

Well I just spent most of my money on this stupid engine lol, so its kinda a big deal, and when it was 5 min in and I realized the temp gauge wasnt working, or my mechanical oil pressure gauge didnt work, I kinda started to flip out lol. But no signs of overheating issues, started up good after it cooled down.

Man im lovin that idle rumble . :thumb:

Oh I forgot a pic of the radiator in, kinda bummed you cant see more of it but the tanks, darn that ac coil being in the way lol. This things in their so solid, when you push on the tank the radiator doesnt move, but the whole truck moves, so hopefully that keeps it save from any unwanted movement
