Deuling's 1985 K5. "Restart thread on post #8415"

I thought you went to college? That is a significant diameter change. Did you fatten up the secondary jet too? What power enrichment spring?

I went to college for CAD.

Idk they are 7037 rods. I cant imagine running it rich is going to hurt anything. Other than maybe foul plugs. I put the pink springs in. 7hg.

I left the jets alone, they already measured out to be the same size as the bigger jet in the kit.

Since you have a wide band I would really nail down the 14.7 cruising and 12.5 wot. If you can datalog and see the tip in rpm of the accelerator pump this will make it all really come together. I would set timing first though.

Cad doesn't teach you area of a circle? Put it solid works then to see the different area. It has different steps too right?

There is 2 sets of jets. One for primary and one for secondary.

You didn't buy an innovative wide band? I would tell you to buy a advance kit, put in the weights and one light/one med spring and wind it up to about 3000 and set the total at 38. Those heads are lazy and could maybe even use 40 but this is conservative. You need to start listening for the rattle till you know what it feels like. Honestly if you are working it hard in the sand 91/92 wouldn't hurt since your quench is so poor.

I was going to say 34 - 36 since you just blew a gasket and didn't hear any pinging, but with your low compression 38 is probably fine, although maybe not needed with that cam and make sure you listen for pinging. I run 38 locked in my car but I don't usually recommend it to others because it is on the high side and you probably won't feel the difference but may be able to measure it. Also, that is 36 all in at 3 - 4k rpm and with the vacuum can unplugged, then plug it back in and have fun.

I run two light springs in the dizzy as even the medium ones seem to drag it out too long and aren't all in by 3k, you have a mild converter, so it should be fine with two light springs. You don't want to set it at 3k if the timing keeps climbing above that due to heavy advance springs, or that is a recipe for bad news.

So to sum it up, disconnect vacuum advance, rev it it up while setting the timing until the timing stops climbing, then set to 36 or whatever you decide, then hook the vacuum advance hose back up and you should run pretty good.

You can go further and start tweaking the vacuum advance limit but that is only for cruising. I do recommend what 427 said too though, buy a spring kit for $10 and install the weights and two lightest springs(or one medium, I like two lights). It will bring your timing in quicker and give you better throttle response and more power on takeoff.

One of the many reasons people think LS engines feel so fast is because they are all computer controlled and usually are tuned well and have better part throttle response and in general run very well. Most people don't take the time to tune a carb and dizzy correctly and that makes a big difference. Of course LS engines do have larger cam diameter with better profiles and higher ratio rockers and higher flowing 15 degree heads, etc, but thats a different subject. ::pimp1:

First time I ever went to the racetrack my car went 13.27 as a best. With some carb changes and timing and some accessory mods I was running 12.50s. Your looking at probably 70 hp with just fuel, timing, and electric fans, etc. Then some weight loss put me in the 11s, then some nitrous made it 10.40s. This is all with the same engine(from intake to oil pan), same exhaust, same trans, rear gear, tire, etc. My point is, tuning can make a huge difference, most people don't do it though. So listen to 427 because just bolting the engine together and making it run is leaving a lot on the table.

Well the dizzy is out. I have the msd street fire. Which kit do I order?

I only use a med and a light because over time I see lights become too weak to pull in the weights at idle once the oxide starts to build up. I lock out most stuff at 38, idles and starts better. But of course I know what destination sounds like.

So $5 kit or $20 kit.

Light springs or light and med?

What comes in them stock?
