Deuling's 1985 K5. "Restart thread on post #8415"

So exciting!

Morgan from sidetracked offroad hooked me up big time with a custom harness for these, and got them to me stupid quick. I totally wasn't expecting these to show up until end of next week.

With the 2 pods I already have from him, plus these 3, is should be able to light up the dunes pretty well.

It looks pretty cool Adam. Are you attaching the upper tubes inside the grill?

How are you going to end the side tubes? Maybe cap them off at the same angle as the fenderwell in that spot?

The tubes will get ran to the shock mounts which have another tube running to the cage on the back side.

I ordered some of ruffstuffs fancy 1.75 disconnect couplings, still waiting for those so I can finish weld.

I'm not really sure about what I'll do for caps yet. I left them long just for that reason.

Unfortunately I have had a fever of 102 and been laying in bed since I got home from work yesterday :(

Also my weekend is pretty well booked so not looking like any shop time.

Your thread has gotten REALLY quiet lately. Ever since Dune season started (which I guess is good, as it means nothing broke during season). But this has got to be the only recent winter where you haven't had the whole truck ripped apart bettering it. Playing with just the bumper seems underwhelming after several winters of awesome fab work.

I guess that means you are happy with the current suspension?

Ive been trying to not post in it if I don't have any real updates other than just thoughts. That's why it dies.

Yeah I haven't and probably wont get to all the things I wanted. The other projects and stuff I started kinda pushed it aside. But really, the thing just plain worked all year, and aside from fixing a few leaks, changing fluids, thourough bolt check, grease everything, and just a good once over.... I think its ready to rock and roll again.

I finally got to just have fun with the thing most of the summer. I really enjoyed that.

But once I get my parts from ruffstuff, ill finish up the bumper and get that out of the way. Next is to get my jack mounted securely to the cage, no more ratchet straps. And at that time mount toolboxes to cage as well.

Ive got 6 axles to regear and or go through here in the next couple months (2 sets of 1 tons, and a d44 front 14sf rear), so that will take up some time, and hopefully get me some decent $$$ in the pocket. Ive got fancy tools that should be showing up anyday now for that :D

One other reason for not having the rig in pieces, is that Brett wants to re arrange the shop here soon, which will require moving the rigs outside for a bit, so Ive been keeping it mobile until that is over.

Cool. Thanks for the update. :waytogo:

Gear work is such a good money maker. How much you charging em ?

Brett and I were just shooting some ideas through text, but he was thinking $300 per axle set... :dunno::ears:

Im going to weld up some fixtures for the welding table, like the ones Jantz made in his shop. So you can stand up nice and straight and work comfy, and spin the axle, clamp it down etc. It will be nice.

So I don't know what anyone local there charges but I charged 250 an end if the axle is out. 275 an end if the axle is in and 200 if they just brought me a third member.

Get a gearing notebook keep track of everything.

Also when your doing gears for money. Pretty good is not good enough. Hold your setups to the highest standard. Comebacks on gearsets SUCK.

That's a good point, and price has not been put on the table, so there's room for change.. And yes, I won't be playing good enough. The one set is being pushed by a high HP Supercharged BBC.... Id rather not see it esploded....

Eric. What brands should I recommend they buy? Id like to have them show up with gears, and install kits all ready to go. Ive had great luck so far with USA Standard Gear install kits and gears.

My least favorite are motives. Yukons are definitely a step up from usa standard. G2 and nitro are both good. Seirra is fine Richmond is fine. Summit branded are fine

But its more about set up. I tend to recommend usa standard or yukons.

I also tell anyone who doesn't buy a master install kit if I tweak a bearing using their old bearing they are paying for it not me and they are completely on their own after its done.

It's just easier to use new stuff.
