Deuling's 1985 K5. "Restart thread on post #8415"

I just use a vacuum plug.. When it shoots out you are on compression stroke. You could use a dial gauge but I just use my finger.

I was going to use the depth side of a pair of calipers, I dont see how that wouldnt find it exactly when the head is off....

You have to have TDC of the compression stroke, remember it's a four stroke engine so there are two TDC, only ONE is the compression stroke TDC.

Since your tearing it apart I would do this, pull all the spark plugs out, rotate engine with your finger in the number 1 plug hole, when it starts to build compression and push on your finger stop rotating. Don't touch the engine to rotate it after this.

Tear it all apart then using a simple flat bar strap with two holes punched to line up with head bolt holes on either side of the #1 cylinder and one bolt hole lined up dead center of the piston, install a short bolt into the center hole, gently rotate the cylinder up on the rest of the compression stroke until it hits the bolt, mark the harmonic balancer and timing cover, reverse the engine rotation until the piston hits the bolt on the other side, mark the harmonic balancer. Halfway between these two marks is TDC of the compression stroke, you can shorten the bolt up in the strap to make it show TDC easier as the distance between the marks gets smaller.

If your doing a new cam you will need to find TDC of #1 but you will then install the cam timed to show that TDC as the compression stroke. In this case tear the whole damn thing apart and find TDC as above but the "compression stroke" won't matter as there will be no cam installed and the cam will get installed to match the engine TDC and thus make that stroke the compression stroke.

Clearer than Mud?

I think thats what the post zim put up was saying. You just used less words....

I like less words :D

That sounds good. So most important make sure #1 is on the compression stroke before tearing heads apart. Noted.

I dont think ill do a cam at this point.

Ok $15 isnt that bad. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CIQ9TQ/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

What is the best method/writeup for doing all the assembly? As far as torque amounts, sequences, and how to do all the rockers etc.

That's exactly the "flat bar" piece.

There's more than one way to skin this cat. none of them are wrong, I would bet that several of them even take the same amount of time and effort.

I'm still assuming that you need the TDC mark so you can time the engine? I'm a K.I.S.S. guy. Keep it simple stupid, so the finger in the plug hole just let's you know your starting the compression stroke. At that point you can make a "long bolt" that threads into the plug hole and you can to the rotate gently to touch the bolt when rotating one direction and then reverse and touch the bolt going the other direction too. That's useful if your not removing heads which isn't your case.

PS: my LQ4 with a cam doesn't have these timing issues you speak of:flipoff13:

Yah I ordered it, should be here thursday.

Yes I too like to keep it simple.

Now when you say turn it one way and then the other way to get the 2 marks..... You arer just bringing it up from one direction to get first mark, and then going past that and bringing it back up while spinning it the other way to get the 2nd mark?

Ordered Fel Pro Performance head gaskets, intake gaskets, and a new set of AC delco plugs. Id rather not use a sealant as id like to have some confidence in playing with it.

Hoping to just find a bad head gasket when I tear into it this weekend.

Quesiton, why do I need fancy tools to mark TDC. Cant I just move the crank back and forth and find where the piston is at its highest, with say a pair of calipers???

If your pulling the heads than that's not a band-aid (sounds like a fix to me):thumb:

As long as your crank mark lines up with the fixed mark on the timming cover I dont see why not:dunno:

He doesn't have a tab on the cover for timing....

Adam get a different chain cover with one on it. :doah:

LS swap, that is all, have a good day.

Too much wheeling to do this summer, and not enough bank account to make that happen. Im sitting here with a maxed out credit card from the past few weekends, get paid at midnight thursday, and that wont pay off the CC and the bills due in the next few weeks. So Ill pay the min CC payment, pay my bills, and work a bunch of OT to get back on top and pay it all off by next payday.

Understandable,

maybe next week? :D

Lol, maybe this winter. After I actually get it up in the sand and see how the new upgrages work.... It may lead to coilovers and linky stuff first. But if it works good the LS is my next upgrade.
