Deuling's 1985 K5. "Restart thread on post #8415"

I feel like you are in the razors edge of being burnt out by the Blazer at this point. I think to continue to press on with mods right now will make you begin to resent every dollar and hour spent on the truck. Later on, after the burn out feeling has gone away, you will unwittingly regain the desire to make improvements to the truck and will look forward to spending time and money on the truck again.

^^^This.

You gotta remember where that line is, and make sure not to cross it. Keep it fun, and try to leave the stress behind.

I'm with y6mgisi.

That said, I've felt the "hate you guys" a time or two as well. It only feels that way when they are right. lol

That's fair enough. But the other thing is no one is saying a trailer queen race engine. But there is no arguing that making use of the higher lift available would net you more power and torque while maintaining street ability.

^^
the cam you have, (I have looked at it before, but don't remember the specs,) I know there is room for improvement. I am saying (can't speak for anyone else) that you should go up some. Which you can do and still have streetability.

Everyone else is throwing their opinion in so I'll toss mine in as well. If the original heads are good, throw them back on, reassemble, drive. Gather parts and money for either an ls, or gather parts and money to do the aluminum heads and roller cam. Either one to be done at a later date, months if not years down the road.

That's just my .02c. I know you have a knack for making the decision that makes most sense to you.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head there Mitch.

Doesn't Craig have a good running straight 6 you could just swap in? I mean, since we're covering all ends of the spectrum here

Lols. Just talked to the machinist.

He liked the idea of the iron heads better if they worked already and I never had real problems relating to them ( blame blowing the gasket on me never doing wot carb tuning).

So hes gonna get on those and try to get them out this week so we can get it back together. Then hes gonna mess with the aluminum ones and get those all back together. Then I either have some fresh backup heads if I do wanna upgrade later, and throw in a cam. Or I can sell them.

But if this means blazer can be running by the end of next weekend....

:woot:

That's awesome:waytogo:

Can't beat getting it back together, and a better carb tune by next week.

Glad to hear the good news.

I vote for keeping the 882 junk as well!
Did you assemble the heads to block before?
You really need to get the rocker geometry right to keep from hurting or prematurely wearing out parts of the valvetrain
Also clean your parts and tools thoroughly before assembly and take your time...if something doesn't feel right stop and figure it out.
Assemble it with the same parts as before and save for a bigger build later if you want

That sounds like a solid plan. Just leave it alone and get thru the summer if he can do those quicker.

Then make decisions as far as head/cam changes later on when you compare the costs of an Ls and decide what the future holds.

Dude I made 238hp/289tq at the rear tires in my 72 with a basic stock 355 all I did was set the quench put flat tops, valve springs, comps x4262 cam some lifters roller rockers an air gap with a holley 750 and that motor screamed! This was in a 4200lb bone stock k20 with 410s and 31s it was fun to drive sounded great would put a smile on your face the second your turned the key. You don't need big crazy alum heads to have a great reliable package you just have to match what you have already.
That 400sb is an awesome motor. If you cam sum1104 if I remember correctly is still good run it.. I'd only recommend checking your clearances for quench and if it's good call it a day and slap it together otherwise correct that and make it run(tune) as good as you can :) my wide band has saved me a few times 170$ well spent. Good luck on the rebuild.

I am gonna add 3c here, I know the Ls is a cost effective quick way to add power but I like simple dimple old school tech that can run on very little electrical. My truck is still a sbc and I plan on keeping it that way until I run out of sbc parts.. It's hard to justify the swap when the costs can be high and lots are hidden..

So what's the machinist doing to the smog heads? You mentioned magnaflux, is he milling them too? Are they even warped? What about the block?

If they do need milling, so do the aluminum heads so I can't see spending money twice to do the work twice. Do it once, do it right. Aluminum heads FTW

Yeah, I don't get sticking the 882's back on when you have the other heads already.

Martin

Somehow it seems that skinny jeans are cutting off circulation to his (gear)head.

:D

At least you have a plan.

If the other ones didn't require screwing around with taking new measurments and new parts that I will have to wait for, I would.

But since these will bolt in and I know it all worked, that means I can get it in and running, tune it and go play. It's been under the knife since October of last year. This waiting $hit's getting out of hand. Dunes have been open since April 1st.

Sounds like a plan.

Then take your time with your next build....and dont forget, like you said before...get that debt paid off before you add more to it.

So, any mention of running MLS head gaskets? With the .040 bore on a big cylinder there isn't much room to seal between the walls.
