Deuling's 1985 K5. "Restart thread on post #8415"

I am with Heath dyno tuning is for those last few hp. Learn how to tune your engine before you dyno tune it. Just changes in humidity can give up power. Or increase it sometimes. I love tinkering with timing curves and carbs and plugs etc. But a whole lot can be gained from just marking out a distance and messing around for a day

As far as milling some 882s. My set is .050

I have a set of camel humps milled .080

Its enough to raise compression. Out here where we drive at 6000 ft + elevation we do everything possible to get some queeze out of these engines

I feel bad for this kid. He thinks he has a bad ass dd but it is the automotive equivalent to a turbo weed eater. He no more knows detotation than I understand why he dresses that way.

As a former flatlander: I hear you on that. Its hard to comprehend until you live here(5000 ft and above).

This why I built my 406 thumper.... Also why I believe a cam, those heads and a dnyo tune should be happening in this thread....

Do it once and do it right, no such thing as too much power.

I never said my motor was badass. It was cheap and makes good torque.

not to argue the point against bumping the ccompression, but I thought the idea was to just get this puppy just back running again the simplest way possible?

if he brings the heads down enough to raise compression, then wouldn't he be back to measuring and getting new pushrods? at which point he "might as well" do the aluminum heads and a new cam. I think at this point, the smart money is still on, get the heads back on the truck with the least work done as possible.
drive thru the summer and have a great time, and spend the next few months figuring out if you are going to do a LS or build the engine back up with the new heads and a few go fast goodies.

just get this thing moving so we can see how the suspension is working

Well I am poor so I have run pushrods that weren't perfect. You are right get it together, go alum, then frontal lobeotomy. But fatten that carb!

Thank you....

Machinist guy sounded like the heads wont need much. He is still going through them just to make sure.

Hoping to put it together this weekend.... I too would like to try the suspension. Its more fun than engine anyways

He should be checking these things when he built the motor but as long as most of its stock I should work.. There is a .020 swing in head gasket and piston clearances so milling the head and making the most of the compression you have should be no extra work.. Unless those slugs are in the hole .030 or .040 you should be able to come up with a head-gasket that will make the most of what it is now. Without getting into valvetrain geometry.

Agreed with Brian. Carb kit and some old school hot rod tricks is how I dialed in my carb and engine. It woke it up a lot!!!

My panties are fine but it's his season to have fun with this. He should just get it running good and rip into it during the winter when he can do the ls swap or heads with a cam.

Exactly.... Being practical has its benefits on here once in a while.... Which everybody seems to forget

Whatever we were Providing technical advice.. Last time it was memes.. You guys are a joke make up your mind?? Do you wanna chill and shoot the **** or want technical help with a problem?? Obviously it needs help because it popped a gasket so you as friends are not helping by "just getting it going" this is like an episode of the golden girls

I'm all for the tech but why go overboard with the work that isn't necessarily needed.

I built my truck in my head reading all night long for years. I'm a tech junkie.

Exactly.... We know that if Deuling wanted to do the aluminum heads, he would need to get a bunch of other stuff in the motor first. With the iron heads, he has a known good setup and if he fixes it the right way what's the big deal?

No, the proclamation was made that he would run the iron heads, call it a day and run it for this season over a week ago. And we are still going on and on about stuff that no one is interested in and no one asked about.

Advice on stuff that matters is needed and encouraged, but when it comes to just beating a horse that was never alive in the first place, it just makes you look like bad and frustrates the rest of us.
