Diagnostic Now....Broke XJ shaft, melted rotor. Cause?

Also learned that there is no way in Hell to hook up a cheap remote starter switch to the starter post on my starter . My hand is too big to squeeze the clip and slide it in.

So.....timing chain slop and compression will have to wait until i have a helping hand.

This is what is so frustrating about this place. It bad enough that its online, but everybody lives so far away.

If I was close by, I bet I could get that clip on. I've got normal to largish hands, but I have always been real good at working them into tight places........

Thanks for the offer.

I can wire in a lead to hook to the remote starter, but I'll wait for now.

Stoked I found the source of one problem!

You may not care but... I swapped out the XJ shaft that I was using for a Borgeson unit, I couldn't be happier with it.

Thanks for the input. Right now, i'm strung out financially over vehicle stuff.

Paying $35-50 is the right approach for me, and it worked well for a long time.

Any idea where and why it snapped? Don't think I have heard of one doing that before unless it was just worn completly out.

Plus, like 4X4 said, they are usually designed that you still have steering if the joint breaks.

Post some pics if you can.

Under light load, i think it would still turn. After reading some of the XJ shaft threads, it seems that the top section of the shaft has a rubber damper in it. I think i spun it there.

Waiting for my roommate to get home so he can help me confirm. Then i'll pull the shaft and figure out what happened.

Confirmed. Spun at the damper.

Who was one to sell me? Or wants to go find me one? I don't have a chance to go to a junkyard.

Weld the top together. You don't need a new one. :waytogo:

Who wants to lend me a welder?!

Not a bad idea actually.....although, would probably be easier to have a new one show up at my doorstep for $40 like people were selling them for....

Honestly man, I would pay someone to weld it for you. I've done several XJ Shafts (as you know) and paid out of pocket for someone to tack weld the tops. It's just something that should be done to each one :waytogo: I will more than likely hit the junkyard this weekend some time. I need an electrical connector and don't want to pay $13 plus shipping for one. :eek1: I will keep you updated but wont have anything till then.

Thanks for the offer. Need to take a look at it when i get it out tomorrow. It would need to be welded all the way around.

Now that I think about it, I may be able to snag a welder from work, but don't have a 220v outlet in my garage.

Put me down for a XJ shaft if you run across one this weekend. Lets keep in touch. I just don't have a chance to make it out to the parts yards much.

Hot date has me booked for the weekend - Peter Frampton concert!

I know someone with a Millermatic 200 AND a 220v outlet (3 of them to be exact).

I don't know if anybody has mentioned it, but what about the pickup coil inside the distributor? I've seen pickup coils just die while driving down the road and it acts as if somebody just flipped off a light switch like yours did.

I second the pickup coil. I've had them go out in my truck and blazer. The truck ran fine when cold, but as soon as it warmed up it ran like crap. When it went out in my blazer it had similar symptoms to yours.

If the pickup coil goes out, I lose spark, right? The pickup coil in my distributor died, and I swapped in a new dist the night before the truck died on me. Ran fine that day, then died on the way home

With a bad pickup coil, you'd still have spark when the truck is cold, but as soon as the pickup coil gets hot enough it shuts down and then won't run again until after the pickup cools down again.

Since you said your Suburban ran until after you swapped in a new distributor, I'd be willing to bet that it has something to do with that distributor. Like people have said here, 'just because it's new doesn't mean it's good'.
