250K+ darned hard miles so far, original gears, no broken axles, yet.......

Did you just say IFS because you didn't anyone would know what a TTB is?

My dd has aN AAM 9.25 front and a AAM 10.5 rear... Burb has a d60 and a 14bff. I think that 10 bolts under anything more than 5k pounds is a joke.
 
60 & 14 here. The 14 was already in the truck it's a 81 3/4ton. P.O. tore the 10b up and fixed it then I busted a shaft a 60 seemed more economical than a ten in parts repairs and down time.

Jimmy has 10 bolts. Looking for a 6 lug SF right now. I even had a set of tons for the Jimmy, but thats not the direction I am going with it.

10 bolts are fine if you aren't breaking them. Once you start to break its time to upgrade.

Shoot I ran 38s on a 10 bolt front ( unlocked) for 2 years. Then I found my set of tons.

I ran a set of factory, 8 lug 10 / 14bsf under my 86' GMC longed with a built 400ci and never broke anything...swapped them under my K5 and ran em for another year or so with no issues. I finally found a deal on a set of tons and could finally rest easy wheeling with the family, knowing at least my axles wouldn't send us hiking home.

On the other hand, I did have a 94' GMC IFS w/ a 10 rear and I shredded the ring gear teeth running 35's. It may have been a set up problem from the factory...dunno. I also busted the CV half shafts 3 times. This is why I am running a straight axle rig for wheeling now.

Nope. Just compensating. Everybody is post up big axles. So I figured I would go bigger. I did wheel it across a dirt lot the other day.

Well, I'd like to say so, but the plain fact of the matter is, it was almost midnight when I posted, I had been up since 4 in the morning, and I could not remember the term Twin Traction Beam.............

But I could remember Independent Front Suspension.......
 
I'm running locked 10 bolts front & rear.


...with 2 spare rear shafts in the back.



I'll be upgrading next year.
 
I'm running a d60/14bff in the blazer and I've grenaded the passenger inner/outer 35 spline... But that's what happens with 44s and mud that's 5 feet deep...:D
 
I don't do a lot of off pavement stuff. Mostly trails when I was in the Army going to training areas.

I have 35s and I tow a 4600 lb boat. With the factory 3.73s it was a dog on the stock 350 and I knew I needed to re-gear the thing.

Rather then pay someone to do the gearing front and rear which I'm sure would have ran near 2k I went and got a donor 1028 for 1200 bucks.

In hind-sight I wish I would have just re-geared the 10b/14sff now. I've still got the d60 in the shop torn down waiting for me to finish it.
 
The 10b or Dana 44 front is not too bad. They are good for maybe 37's. It's the rear that's bad news - good for only 33's maybe.
 
I dont know about the rocks n stuff but around here guys running 38's and bigger with LOTS of hp all run d44's in the front of their mud trucks. I mentioned the 60 to a few and none of them wanted one due to weight. they say a 44 can be built just as tuff:dunno: I'm sure its a lot more money. but maybe not if you already have one to build
 
It's basically the same here, a "decent" 60 here goes for 800 and up. Usually way up. On top of that the rebuild, regear, locker, hubs, bearings. They can get pricey. It is a stronger axle all in all, just a bit expensive for some.
 
That comes down to terrain. Mud is usually easier on parts than sticky rocks ledges and climbs. Weight is also a consideration in mud as well as sand.

I wheeled a D44front, and front 10bolt for years with no issues granted they were open. I just came across a D60 for 100 bucks and had to take it.

Well to start, this is a great forum and i've learned so much with interaction with some of the knowledgeable people on here. I currently have an 89' k5 that has your typical suspension mods (shackle flip in rear, springs and zero rate, and etc etc) and even have a cv rear shaft. I currently run 37's on the 10 bolts:eek1:. I do have a 14sf in my garage that i havnt got around to messing with yet, but plan to when funds are right along with some regearing.

My question is, does EVERYONE really have the 14ff/d60??? I know its a bullet proof combo, but damn, everyone and their moma seems to have them. My current 10bolts have a little $$ in them and have been fine (knock on wood) for a long time. I mean, if u rock crawl every weekend thats one thing, but for normal driving and occasional dirt/mud offroad, is it really needed?? Maybe its different for me since i live in eastern North Carolina, but is there anyone still running 10 bolts or just 14sf??

Yes, most people do after a while....
Save your money on the 14sf gear change and start looking and wheeling and dealing for a 60/14 combo. They pop up on craigslist from time to time at a decent price. Or find a donor truck with them on already. Pretty easy in the NW to do.
