Don't call it a build thread... (Do I need spacers, or a lift?)

Kinda just doin this to chronicle the progress/repairs/and upgrades I'm making to my truck. Shoulda started this when I bought the thing, but oh well. Picked it up six months ago. 1990, one ton Silverado Bonus Cab. 454, 60/14, 400/205. Ran ok, bad exhaust leaks, shotttttttttt tires, baaaaaddddd brakes. Interior was beyond shot, generally filthy, carpet stained to ****, headliner tore, hanging and stained; drivers section of the seat tore up, foam tore up and broken springs causing your back to hit the bar in the back, power windows barely went up or down. No tailgate. Radio only kinda worked. One fuel tank leaked. After making the 30 mile trip home the other tank was leaking and I learned it needed a starter. Yay.

I live on an alley with a rather shallow garage, so getting this thing in my garage ain't never gonna happen, too many toys in there anyhow even if it was deep enough! Beached it at my dads for a few weeks until I had some time to make it road worthy, he doesn't have a usable garage, but he does have a large paved driveway.

Had a break in the weather in February, so I took a few days off and spent them with my dad working on the truck. New battery, starter, replaced fuel tanks/brackets/pumps/senders/lines/switching valve; pads/calipers/master cylinder; oil change, shocks. And with that it was on the road.

As money has permitted i've been pecking away at it. Did a tune up. Exhaust manifold gaskets and doughnut gaskets and studs to quiet her down. Installed a radio from a 2000 Silverado and some 6x9's in the cab corners to get some tunes in it. Pulled the plow frame off and added some bumper guards. Scooped used grille and threw that on, fogged the core support black while i had it apart. New power window motors and tinted suburban door glass for the back doors. Pulled out the head liner and all the trim from around the windows (truck had the typical white pillar trim and headliner and blue everything else crew cab interior.) Replaced all the tie rods and threw on a set of custom made 19.5's. Installed trailer wiring. Fixed the dome and cargo lights and replaced them with LED's. Pulled about what seems like a million mouse nests out, it smells much nicer in there now. The truck is a Bonus cab, so it came from the factory with no rear seat, rear seat belts or rear carpet. Was fortunate...

Got a bunch of work done on the interior this weekend. Put a rehual on the gauge cluster with some aluminum tape and LEDs. Dash looks great at night. Fixed the Clarance lights. New used seat up front, and the crappy old seat in the back hidden under a seat cover. Painted interior trim and new headliner in. Scooped up a cheesy carpet dash cover to use until I can find a deal on a nice one.

Here are some before shots, you can see the nasty white trim and headliner had seen better days...

thanks! Headliner is OEM type headliner material purchased from a local automotive upholstery supply shop over the stock backer board.

That seems odd that it was ordered without a rear seat, but in a pretty high trim level other than that. More details on your 19.5's?

Martin

Yeah, being a loaded bonus cab makes it an odd duck. It seams most bonus cabs went on to become conversion package rigs. The 19.5s are home made. Dually rims with the centers cut out and standard 16 inch eight lug centers welded in. Guy I got them from made them and said they were amazing in the snow on his two wheel drive truck.

Nice to see another Bonus Cab. They're kinda few and far between. Same trim package as mine but blue. I recently discovered that the Bonus Cabs didn't come with a back seat, just the 3+3's did. I got my truck with a back seat but it's on front seat brackets. I just need to get some of the tilting brackets for the back of the seat so I can put the rear seat brackets I have on.

My maroon front seat came out of the back of a crew cab, so it tilts, and had the correct rear seat mounting brackets. I swapped the brackets with my shot front seat that has a fixed back. Doing this I saw no way to convert from fixed back to tilting. What I ended up doing was some trimming on the plastic cover on the fixed back seat and taking one bolt out from each side where the seat back attached to the bottom so I can pivot the seat forward. It seams the framework of the seat back is different between the fixed seats and the folding seats.

Got the bed off today. Gotta fix the frame where the abomination of a rear bumper was welded to it and ruined the frame. Gotta wire wheel and needle scale everything and mop some paint on it, run new brake lines, run new fuel lines and replace at least one fuel tank.

Frame, crossmembers, brackets and whatnot all wirewheeled/sandblasted and or needle scaled. New fuel lines from the switching valve to the pumps. New tank on the left because the one it had leaked and the new bed is left side door only, currently burning the fuel out of the right tank to take it out and put a new one in. New shocks installed. Frame ends repaired. Step bumper installed. Trailer hitch installed. Extra back-up lights added. Seven pin trailer plug mounted in the bumper. Rust free bed (and free cap!) installed. Only 783 more things to do before the truck is worth bragging about!

Hey man, GREAT JOB on that headliner! :waytogo:

I've done a few, and I know they can be a b*tch to get right.
That one looks phenomenal!

Keep up the progress! :D

Thanks man! hardest part of the headliner was getting it in and out!

Truck is looking good, you going to paint it the color of the bed?

Oh and glad your not going to scrap it. :haha:

Just kinda pic whoring the new wheels and tires. Ain't done nothing cool in a while. Did front wheel joints this fall and got to use my new portable vice. I have a pile of parts laying around for when spring comes. Until then I'm just driving her...

Yes. They are H2's off an '08 I believe. I gotta come up with some center caps. The 2000-2009 8 lug ones I have don't fit.
