Drill Press rebuild

Here we've got it wired into the lathe motor starter.

And here's a coupl of freshly drilled holes.

I can't run it in high speed unless the lathe is on, providing the third leg. Apparently the static convertor doesn't work well on a delta wound motor.. It runs great using the lathe as a rotary phase convertor, so that's what I'll do for now.

OSUM!!!!! That kicks arse Matt,,,,Never for a second did I doubt you could do it.You just turned sh!t into icecream and then asked what flavor everyone wanted from yer new soft serve machine.   :D You rock....;)

Thats awesome, Ill have to show him these pics

Did I miss it somewhere? What type of drill press is that? I would LOVE to have one like that...

TGSB got it in trade for some POS. 3 phase, heavy duty gearhead drillpress that's prolly 40 or 50 years old. He gave it to mofugly, and the CK5 brotherhood got it from WA state to CA in almost record time for almost nothing. Matt is rebuilding it...

The lounge is occasionally good for something other than n00b sacrifices and bad humor. :D

Yeah, an old 3.8. :haha: The guy who did my windshield collects junk Mustangs, and pieces them into ok cars, and wanted some parts out of the thing, and offered the press. I was just going to trade it in for scrap if no one on here wanted it. :yikes: Old boy at work told me he'd spend a grand to rebuild it...

BadDog, here's the nameplate:

Today, I made some handles for the gear shifters, and for the column locking levers for the table and head:

I need to find something cool to use as knobs at the end of the handles, mini billiard balls or something.

Thanks for the various pics, and yes, I am painfully jealous of you getting that monster for free. I would definitiely run it off VFD to pick up all the issing SFMs, but other than that... SAWEEEEETTT!!! :waytogo: I just love old light insustrial tools like that...

talk to roadnotca - he does billiard ball shift knobs for our rigs and can cut them to whatever thread you want. :) definitely recommend him - super cool guy and easy to work with. he's got a thread in the vendor's forum.

Thats awesome man! Ive been lurking the whole time. Glad to see its being proerly restored and done justice. Nice work!

More goings on with the drill press....

TSGB sent me the table. It doesnt look like the original table, but more like a faceplate for a large lathe. No matter, it makes a perfect drill press table. But, there was no means of attaching it to the press. I needed to make an adapter to thread into the back of the table, and slip into the reciever hole on the press.

So, good thing I own a lathe. I grabbed a chunk of round steel stock and cut off about 7".

Next I turned the "stub" end down to size.

Then I flipped it around and turned the threaded end to the proper diameter.

Here's a shot after a few passes with the threading bit.

And another, a few more passes and we'll be there...

And, the finished part...

Ready to be screwed in....

And the table installed!
