Dual Circuit Windstar Fan - Final Shroud Update 05/11/11

dremel and some cabosil thickened resin work well for voids and non structural cracks...

looks very good man....

countersinking is such a pain the arse building method as opposed to just drilling a hole for a bolt/screw... ain't no room for forgiveness.. musta done a hundred the last year..

I was just out in the garage working on my windstar fan shroud when I decided I really needed to look this thread over to double check some stuff. I was just sitting there trying to remember who the thread author was when what comes over the radio?

Awesome work. I have to admit I haven't read every post in here, but I'm wondering if you feel confident that the fuse block you have can handle the current? I have a few of that same kind and the catalog I ordered from says it's good for 20 amps. Not sure if that is per circuit or for the whole thing - the main feed post is only 1/4" or so, which seems pushing it for something intended to feed 6 circuits with 10 gauge wire from each.

I'm trying to put together parts for doing an electric fan upgrade and new headlights, so I'm interested in making sure I have a fuse block capable of feeding two fans and four headlights simultaneously. I'm not interested in having four in-line fuse holders.

I know I could read through the whole thing, but in summary, what are all the relays for?
 
The fuse blocks are 30A, 600 volts, across all six circuits.

I would not even consider running 6 30A fuses if that were what was actually needed - There'd most likely be a meltdown of some sort. The 30As that were in there (which are not any longer), were just to see "what it would look like filled".

There's only 2 30As currently, which really shouldnt even be 30As.

To figure out how much (of a fuse block beef) you need, you should figure out the initial current (voltage) and amps of each item when they are first turned on - And that total would be your danger zone, or lowest possible (unacceptable) volt/amp capacity for the fuse block .

I would venture to say that a light (or set) will draw the same initially as while on - I dont see how a bulb of any kind needs more to turn on and then drop to a different voltage/amp once on. Motors are the main concern in this instance. They require more to start turning (on) than they do to maintain their revolutions once on.

I'll see if I can find the specs for the Windstar fan and post them up for you, assuming you are using this particular fan.



There are a few relays to spare, obviously - But I will try to account for the original plan, and what's already being used.

The rest I am drawing a blank on. I had a grand plan when I decided on 12 relays, sparing only 2. I do remember trying to plan (way) ahead though. I guess better too many relays laid out than not enough at this point.

That's definitely beef. You may or may not need that much. It will all come down to the numbers you pull for each item you wish to run.

The Windstar fan is a bastaad for finding technical info on. I'll just wait until tomorrow evening and pull numbers off my own - It'll be quicker in the end.

A few questions for you, which may be repeats: where did you find the electrical connectors for the fan motors? Maybe you just cut them off the donor? Rock Auto sells the 3 wire connector but not the 2 wire. It costs $25 too. For that I'd try to use female spades and call it a day. :doah:

Also, what is the third connection for on the big fan? I guess I'll also need to figure out which is + and - so I spin the fans the right direction.
 
I guess I'm asking if anyone has a source other than a junkyard. I already ordered the fans online so I wouldn't have to spend my Saturday driving across town. It would be a waste if I had to do it anyway for the connectors.

Can anyone tell me the function of the various pins on the two fan motors? Like which is + and -, and what the third one is on the big fan? Thanks.
 
I just installed mine a few weeks ago and I used the connectors from the junkyard donor.

afa the 3rd connector on the big fan goes, I'm guessing that its just to turn the fan on when the A/C comes on or something. I ran power to it before I installed them and all it did was turn the fan on at the same speed as the other connection.
 
mine came with the connector from the junkyard if your is not new it may too. I have not heard of any other place to get them aftermarket I would think that you can get them from Ford though.

Couple questions.

When you install the dual temp sending unit, It goes in the drivers side block right?

Then how do you get the temp gauge to work?

I have my fans installed and am currently working on wiring it up.

Driver's side should have a spot for a second sending unit. That's where I put mine anyway.
