Engine builders, please check in - update block is NFG

Ok so fully optioned and priced out, it seems that with a new crank and rotating assembly and everything else I would need to build the 350 is about $2800. That is the best prices I can find to include the cylinder honing tool to new main bearing cap bolts to the valve covers. If I have my crank machined, I could save a few $$. That crate engine is $2999 and that come with a warentee.... I'm going to continue researching and see if I can find better prices.

Im not an engine builder for any means....When i did my 350 .040 over ...i had it cleaned, bored, line honed, decked and magged, also bought the crank, rods, all new gaskets and seals, melling oil pump, keith black pistons, rings, comp solid cam, lifters, arp bolts, timing chain, cam bearings .... really everything to build a rotating assembly for 1600.00, i bought bowtie heads with 2.055 valves used for 400.00 had em all redone for another 250. So really for 2250.00 of course there are the carb, oil pan, intake, plugs, wires, dist, water pump...etc i have 1500.00 in all of that.......3750.00 and the only piece reused was the cast iron...one down fall is its high compression and needs race gas mixed in... Prob if i did it again id look for a crate motor, im not knocking mine but the warranty is nice...

I think I am a pretty decent engine builder. But even I don't give myself a warantee.
Patriot heads are O.K. I say save the money and go iron. Less money and way more durable.

See posts on the first page. Sportsman II's do not come in anything smaller than 200cc intake port. That is too big for a torque/truck style engine. You either have to run cubic inches or rpms to get them to work. (or both) Also, Sportsman II's are weak in the exhaust side. They have not been updated in a while, to keep up with the rising stars of the performance industry. I put a set on a guys spuer trick Chevelle and they are the weak link. Everything else is as good as it gets for a 350 deal, but he has to get the thing up to 5500 to start making real good power. And for the street, it is just not optimum. They are also more expensive than a EQ by a ton. And the EQ's will waste them on any engine, anywhere, anytime and twice on Thursdays.
The last Schaefer tweak on the EQ's is absolutely astounding. These babies are way cleaner out of the box than the Platinum series Dart irons, and make more power out of the box by a fair amount. They are better then the RHS and the early casting Pro Toplines. They are solid as a rock. As clean out of the box as a brodix, and the machining is precise. Why everyone is not running them is beyond me. Maybe I will buy a set of out of the box AFR's. But when the EQ's make more power on the dyno, will people start believing?

EQ Lightning. EQ is for Engine Quest.
It is supposed to be the foundry that did the first Pro Topline deals. Schaefer did some re-working of the original Pro Toplines and they are ultra clean out of the box. I have yet to find a sbc head that will run with them. I just bought two more sets and they are $500 and something bare. And Dyno-Flo wants just under $1000 finished and race ready for application with a silid roller at .650 lift. Not sure the price for flat tappet.

As you can see a roller block is a good investment.:wink1:

Pay no attention to the camshaft type and cam file.... I entered the right specs for the 262 but didn't save it so thats what it shows up as. The 252BH-11 was a cam for my boat but I DID enter the 262's specs......

Everything I've posted is with the 262 part # you gave me.

Chit..... Meant to do the last two with the numbers vz rpm......

new screen shots comin.

okay.... These are the same as the last 2 but instead of the engine info it's tq and HP per rpm(screwed up the screen shots in post #50).

Have you put them against AFR eliminators? (just asking)

Thanks for the screen shots! ;)
BTW were those with the AFR Eliminator heads?

How do you do screen shots? I'd like to show you guys the numbers I'm getting.

Those Engine Quest heads look pretty solid, only according to my camquest they produce the least hp/tq at 398hp@5500rpm and 435tq@2500rpm. Although they are the cheapest by about $100. The AFR Eliminators are still THE BEST making 10-15hp more than every other head I've tried. I guess you get what you pay for.

Nope. Not yet. Also cannot find one that matches up. They only have 195cc right now. Until they have one for a truck application, I won't do a comparison.
Same deal with the Profilers. Can't do a comparison if they don't make a 180. Maybe I should put the profilers against the AFR. But what did I learn? I learn what makes more power for an application that I will never use. Real racing small block chevy's are not 23 degree stuff. And street applications, (Especially trucks) need a small runner. I don't, and none of my customers do, run a class that requires 23 degree heads in an all out racing format. So these heads are dead to me. It would be a waste of my time and money. And I could spend that money on going fast.

I bought a set of the AFR 180cc Eliminator heads in late 2007.

Wow. My mistake. I just called up Scot to try to get a set of unported eliminators in 180 and he said that there was no such animal. That the CNC package at $1500 was the only option. I guess I gotta go do my homework a little better.

Is that why they cost more than anything else, because they are cnc machined?

4x4High: what did you think of the AFR Eliminators?
